Moments after achieving his first victory in a one-day race at Dwars door Vlaanderen, Filippo Ganna played down his chances of racing again this weekend.
Two bike changes, including one for a snapped handlebar, looked like it would end the Italian time-trialist’s hopes of a first WorldTour win on a road bike, only for the two-time World Champion to bounce back into the main peloton. Then, in the closing kilometre, with Wout van Aert only five seconds ahead after first attacking with 40km to go, Ganna broke free of the peloton and rounded the Belgian in the final 150m to take victory a second ahead of the chasing peloton, led by Søren Wærenskjold of Uno-X Mobility who rounded out the podium behind Van Aert.
Despite the long history of the race, Dwars door Vlaanderen is now seen as a warm-up race to the pinnacle of the Flemish Cycling calendar, the Tour of Flanders. Consequently, despite not being scheduled to ride the monument, the question was put to Ganna if, based on his current form, his plans could be changed.

“I think you need to call my girlfriend because she prepares a fantastic dinner for Easter,” Ganna said in his post-race press conference, drawing laughter from the journalists.
Even if Ganna were to make an unexpected appearance at De Ronde, he was also realistic about his limitations on the hillier terrain, and the calibre of the startlist on Easter Sunday. Neither Mathieu van der Poel nor Tadej Pogačar, who between them have won the previous four editions were on the start line of Dwars today.
“Obviously with the big names like Tadej, Wout and Mathieu, you know the podium [on Sunday] is really hard. Maybe I can be a support. Magnus [Sheffield – Ineos Grenadiers teammate] is more of a climber than me for the steep parts, but also last year I arrived in the top-10. Never say never. If I need to work for the guys I work.”
In a final attempt of persuasion, one journalist put it to Ganna that ‘everyone’ wanted to see him line up on Sunday because he was ‘so strong’. Ganna then drew laughter for the second time, saying “I repeat, I cook dinner and then my TV is a 65 inch, so I can then sit on the sofa and watch the race.”
In the women’s race, several favourites for the women’s Tour of Flanders did ride Dwars, with Marlen Reusser triumphing over Demi Vollering and Lieke Nooijen in a sprint a trois, with both Zoe Bäckstedt and Cat Ferguson finishing in the top-10. Unexpectedly, no SD-Worx rider finished in the top-10, maybe proving that some race favourites will save their efforts for the biggest races.
