This is the most brutal grand tour I’ve ever seen… it’s like a rollercoaster of pain day after day.. I can’t imagine ANY non GC contender professional who found out they’d been picked for this race was happy about it after seeing the parcours…

When you say bike fit…  I

When you say bike fit…  I paid £50 for a cleat fit and it took an hour of fiddling about, sorted my knees out, worth every penny for me. I have no input on hot feet, but I do know there are a few ‘specialist fitting’ people out there who will look at your feet better than others.

    Age has little effect on

Age has little effect on carbon.

Both good bikes, pro’s and cons for both..

    TCR Pro’s – Wheels & price. //  Defy Pro’s – newer model.

Depends on the type of rider you are.. looking for a social 50miler on a weekend – go for the defy, looking to hoon it round the streets in a chain gang, go for the TCR. (Both models do both adequetly but the defy is designed for a bit more comfort and the tcr is race geometry to get you longer(?) and lower.

For what it’s worth I’ll be listing my 2013 TCR Compsite, full ultegra for £700 on ebay or £600 off ebay. It’s a size small. (Just in case).

A guy I ride with has a teammachine and I ride a TCR, both are excellent choices IMO.

If the handling is a bit on the edge with the TCR for you then go with the BMC. I’d be happy with either.. however I am in the process of buying a new TCR myself…

    My club members aren’t

My club members aren’t precious about kit. The ‘club committee’ is a bit stringent about who can buy it – you’re not allowed to buy it unless you’re a paid up member. There are a couple of people who are in multiple clubs within the area who wear whatever kit they happen to be riding with that day. It is a bit weird though, seeing a club member in another clubs kit.

We are not football supporters, I would hope that the cycling world would be a lot less tribal than it would be of a man city supporter wearing a man united kit. Round by me (Midlands) the only way you’ll get jeered or sneered at kit wise is twofold 1) turning up to a bash wearing a full world tour pro team kit but not being a pro (less well known teams and foriegn national level are okay though- as it just shows you’ve been abroad) 2) wearing a loud kit – we have an annual ‘best dressed award’ at the club awards night (which is always a mickey take).

I suppose it’s really a matter of whether you’re comfortable wearing the kit or not. If I left a club I don’t think I’d feel good about sporting their colours. Personally I’d just put the word out to some people that you’ve got some kit for sale and ask about for anyone who might want to buy it.

Get some road.cc kit, looks good, is unusual, and lets everyone know that you’re a little more discerning than the average cyclist 😉

    Spatulala, nice one! Great

    Spatulala, nice one! Great glasses.

I’m no expert, but I do have a pair of Oakleys with Prizm lens… they are the business, but then again all Oakley lenses are the business.

I scratched mine within a month of owning them. After a few months of riding them with the scratch in front of my right eyeball and refusing to pay £80 for a new lense, I brought a pair of ‘FauxKleys’ for £14 which came with three different lenses. The fake lenses aren’t as good, but are perfectly acceptable and now I don’t have to think about them as much.

My point being, don’t spend more on lenses unless you ‘want to’ or are fastidious with their care.

    I’ve found that too much

I’ve found that too much caffine messes with my stomach and can bring on a bonk (and honk).

At the TOC the other week I took, two bidons with the zero non caffine tabs in, five non caffine hi-five gels (these for me seem to go down easier than other more jelly gels), a banana, and four Myprotein Energy Bar – Berry – 12 x 60g bars, which are oats, honey and berries, not too dry and seem to go down well.

I did feel a little bulky, but it fuelled me well enough for the 84 miles at pace. I did have to stop for more drink near the end, but if I’d have taken 800ml bidons that wouldn’t have been needed. For once I got my fuelling pretty much right!

That sounds a superb idea for a ride! I bet it’s dead spooky around those roads in the dead of night, I bet you’ll see some signs of life also, full of witches round there!

    or

That  sounds a terrible idea of a ride! I bet you’ll get  trampled on by horses and spells cast on you by witches in the dead of night!

Best of luck, maybe I’ll join you next year (can’t this year #sadface)

I’m no expert with these kind

I’m no expert with these kind of bikes, the Sabbath looks nice. All I’ll say is that I once saw Stu Kerton’s own Mason Definition, and since then I’ve been drooling over it. It truly is an item of beauty, and by all accounts rides amazingly.

RE: FTHR.. doing a test on

RE: FTHR.. doing a test on the road takes you out of controlled conditions straight away, you should be ‘unable to stay upright’ sort of empty at the end of a test… BUT having done a few of these for myself and others I can tell you that it won’t make much different maybe a beat or two at best, after all you’re setting zones of HR here and real world cycling isn’t that accurate. The ‘figure from the test is supposed to be a ‘perfect world, perfect condititions, this is the HR number I can hold for an hour’ number…  you certainly haven’t got one of those and I can’t you’d be able to hold it in real life very often anyway..

My FTHR is 162 – in reality I can hold 158/159 for a sometime without blowing up.

FTP Power on the other hand if you’re using and tracking performance is more critical to get right.

I shouldn’t worry too much, this is standard industry practice.  By not admitting liability at the moment the insurer is merely reserving the right to contest any future claims.  If, for example, you should develop some serious medical complications in a few weeks they are not hampered by an admission of blame.

    Take the money and run.

Or claim for whiplash, now 🙂

    If they don’t accept

If they don’t accept liability, doesn’t that mean that your premium goes up? If they accepted liability it shouldn’t be affected.

(I don’t know abuot these things, but it seems to me that there must be an adverse affect if they don’t admit liability, where liability is so blinking obvious – e.g. they went into you from behind).
