Train it down to south of France (we drove down last year for my 40th).

I don’t think you can go too wrong in France. It’s got mountains, good weather (south), isn’t too far away, easy to get to via train/ferry/bus/plane… oh and cheese, lots of cheese and bread, all you need really.

I see the PR agency for the AA have realised they’d better do some work before their contract runs out…. frankly I’d fire em if that’s all they can come up with.

    As an alternative to Schwable

As an alternative to Schwable, see IRC tubeless tyres – they are supposed to be very good – https://thecycleclinic.co.uk/ Malcolm is the importer, give him a call he’ll help you out.

    Sealant – you’re doing it

Sealant – you’re doing it wrong, however it’s not your fault.

Finding the right sealant has taken me from Stans, to Conti Revo and only in Bontrager’s TLR have I found a friend, albeit a friend who needs a bloody good shake every now and again.

    1) Some of the sealants on the market are just repurposed MTB sealants, totally unsuitable for road (too thick to go through the valve or too thin to seal at higher road pressures).

    2) Shake the bottle, then shake it again, then shake it again… lots – before it goes anywhere near your tyres. There will be ‘particles’ which might get ‘stuck’ at the bottom of the bottle – these particles are the important bits which react/clog up your puncture – with a greater % of them left in the bottle your holes won’t seal and you’ll end up with a plastic film of fluid all over your bike/clothes/people riding behind you.

    3) You can use 20ml and get away with it, but I personally have found that as it does dry up a little, I can’t quite trust 20ml as being enough so I add 40ml and this has been enough.

    4) Instead of the usual repair kit, I carry a small bottle of sealant (see the bontrager bottles above) half filled and one or two air cannisters depending on the length and dependancy of the ride (although I should just carry a pump and do away with the co2) I don’t bother with a tube any more, or tyre levers, or a patch kit, all of it is surplus to me personally, with the right tubeless set up (rim tape, sealant) in place I’ve so far not been in a position where I’ve had a hole not seal or cannot get to somewhere on a reduced psi.

I run 25mm schwalble pro-ones, and I’ve been through about eight of them and swapped back to conti 4000II’s inbetween – the Pro-Ones are a very ‘plush ride’ but being softer than most, they are not a tyre or a commuter tyre. I had an issue with one not lasting a while ago, contacted them directly, returned it to where I brought it and they replaced FOC., bit of a faff but sorted by the UK schwable team with grace.

FYI I can run upto 4mm  wider tape in comparison to my ‘internal width’ rim. It’s been a learnnig curve, but I’m very happy with tubeless now.

    Not much else to comment

Not much else to comment apart from I was advised that a CX bike must have hydraulic brakes or the whole expereince will be muted. Couple of options below your budget for consideration:

    £1000 – hydraulic brake CX bike – http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/road-bikes/boardman-cx-team-bike

    £1100 – hydraulic brake CX bike – http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/CBPXXLAAPEX1/planet-x-xla-sram-apex-1-hydraulic-disc-cyclocross-bike

I was once in the situation

I was once in the situation of bonking and then sitting on two complete strangers wheels for about four miles until the end of a sportive, whilst feeling terriblly guilty, but unable talk more than a whisper never mind to do a turn’. I like to think that they noticed the ashen look on my face and the trail of sick I’d left down my left arm, however I suspect they just think I was some sort of arse for wheelsucking and not being very friendly. That was about 2/3years ago.. I still feel the guilt.

In a situation where this has happened as you describe on a weekend rideout, I’d have just let them sit on to catch their breath, then simply flicked my elbow and peeled off to let them through. Surely that would have been the sensible response?

I note that you only knew they were there when they were on your back wheel, I have issue with this. To my mind you ‘should’ have been aware that there was a cyclist behind you well in advance of that, I’d say you’re being a bit grumpy about him sitting there, (how long was he there I wonder, how long had he been trying to chase you down) I’d call you out for not being aware of his presence well before he reached your back wheel.

    As terrible as the whole

As terrible as the whole thing is I think I’m a little relieved to know that this is at the least a clear message to drivers, 3 years in prison isn’t to be sniffed at, I just wish they’d change the law so that offenders could have their right to drive taken from them permanently.

Does her 4.5year ban include the three years she’s been sentenced to (not that she’ll do three years I’m sure).

I’m sorry I don’t know. Again my advice is to give your LBS a call or drop in, this is the sort of knowledge which they’ll know straight away and probably stock too.

    I don’t know, BUT I’d imagine

I don’t know, BUT I’d imagine that these are all of a standard. For a quid I think you can risk it.

However it’ll be quicker and nicer to nip down to your LBS or bike mechanic who will have these knocking about.

SOME non-tubeless tyres will work with SOME non-tubeless rims but it could get expensive figuring out which.

I sealed up Fulcrum sport rims with Kapton tape no problem and then built up the rim bed with black electrical tape but I’m  running Schwalbe G-One tubeless tyres. Super plush ride.

Interesting…. What width rim tape did you use? I’ve got 30mm that i used on my mountain bike E13 rims so i was planning to trim it down.

That will be a right faff!  Getting the ‘tape’ to sit smooth and flush is one of the ‘tricks’ required for no hassle riding. If you get it even a bit wrong 1) getting a ‘tight tyre’ to seat on will cause you headaches 2) any bits NOT totally sealed, will get sealant under them, which will mean they’ll raise around the edges (see point 1) and you’ll have to replace the tape sooner than you would expect to.

I’ve fitted 4mm wider tape to 19mm inner width rims, you wouldn’t want to go wider than about 4mm but you certainly do want a bit of ‘extra’ width on the tape.

    Good luck!
