If we didn’t all know what you do for a living, that comment would be quite worrying! 😀

    I’ve veered between cycling
I’ve veered between cycling and martial arts and back over the years. Currently I include a little martial arts in my gym workouts, but my problem is that I can’t do anything just once or twice a week, because the long time it takes to improve frustrates me, so rather than be into both at the same time, I tend to favour one over the other.

The other one is to get a
The other one is to get a little compass and mount to the stem. If you know the rough layout of the area, i.e. you’re going to do about 20 miles south-east then back again, and you have a good look at the map, noting down significant roads/villages etc on the top tube, you’ll be ok. Even if you go off course, you’ll know if you’ve been heading south for the last half hour. Do this in slightly different directions a few times and you’ll end up at junctions saying “oh – THIS is where that one comes out!” If you’ve got a computer (even a cheap one) you’ll also know how far you’ve gone since you went off course.

If you’re regularly in the same area, joining a club is a great idea as suggested by andybnk. If you find they’re a bunch of cliquey snobs that won’t wait for you if you get dropped or puncture, no worries, just move to another one, most are decent.

+1, fair play Tim. Stick around, there’s one or two (only one or two, mind) here who just seem like trolls with some of their comments, but honestly-held views are welcome regardless of whether others agree with them.

Found the commissioner’s page for GMP, complete with an email address 😕 🙂 but no sign of a survey?

These energy bollox bulbs do my head in. They cost more, have some nasty chemicals in (enviro friendly eh?!), last no longer, lie through their teeth about the equivalent wattage rating, and sometimes (cheap ones, admittedly) make the house look bloody haunted with their weird white light!

Just blown a fortune as well on new gu10’s – bugger! At least I know for next time…

I thought the tourbillon was the one I saw on the web recently for £600k! I’ll have to find it again…

I’ve got a great Tag Grand Carrera that my wife gave me for our first wedding anniversary, partly because my disinterest in jewellery means my wedding ring didn’t cost much. In the same position again, I’d be tying myself in knots explaining why something like a Van Nicholas or Cyfac frame is an equivalent long-term investment!

Sorry Trikeman, no idea about your original question!

Edit: found a watch for $25 million!

So Tim, now that Keith’s appeal is out there, does that mean he’s not entitled to keep personal gifts? What’s next, auction any Christmas gifts from his granny as well?

As for the ultimatum with the cam, well let’s put it this way: I disagreed with your original post, but could see what you were trying to say, so I posted a considered and detailed answer, but now? Now I just think you’re a selfish, jealous arsehole who’s suddenly revealed a manipulative train of thought.

I think there is a difference
I think there is a difference between simply viewing material items as a route to happiness and a material item which is merely an enabler to supporting a more positive overall outlook.

From a personal point of view, I felt that yeah sure, everyone faces challenges in one form or another, and I favour absolute independence in terms of how I achieve something. The fact is that I’ve got my health and have manoeuvred myself into a position where I can do a job that I (mostly) enjoy, and earn a good chunk for doing so. I have little sympathy for habitual ‘woe is me’ types, since I have one as a sibling who refuses to help themselves despite ample opportunity and potential.

However, there’s nothing terrible about admitting that you need a leg up. I had been conscious for a while that I hadn’t given to many charities recently, and while I hope Keith isn’t offended by my terming his situation as ‘charity’, the fact is that I like to know that my cash is going to what I think it’s going to. A big charity feeling the need to employ a CEO for £100k+ isn’t really what I have in mind. Or indeed the cancer charity which was recently documented on this site as paying a sportive organiser £100k in order to be the official charity partner (essentially gambling that more than £100k will be raised by riders seeking sponsorship from friends/families). Many of my/my wife’s charitable contributions are also to individuals, often to buy a hot breakfast sandwich, coffee and a couple of pieces of fruit for a random big issue vendor when we’re in town. The look on the recipient’s face is a great reward, and although I’ve never met Keith, the whole incapacity benefit/sicknote/EOP/depression thing was starting to look like a trap where none of the enablers were functioning in order to get him out of the house, improve his outlook, convince him that people weren’t all indifferent to life’s difficulties, and generally prevent a downward spiral.

I appreciate that it sounds like you’ve also faced your own hurdles to get over and it’s great that you seem to have developed a sense of self-ownership for improving your situation, but one person’s mental health issues are not the same as another’s. I just hope this kickstarts some positive events for Keth.

To be fair I lived in a flat at the time, and the meters were in a cupboard at the end of the hall, but that left 20-odd ft of pipe that wasn’t on my property.

I had a leak problem, and kept receiving demands for £640-odd. I argued the toss a few times on the phone, and eventually a new bill arrived for £140. Water is a basic human right so they can’t cut you off, they just wrote off £500 of it. She just needs to refuse to pay it a few times and they’ll get bored. Good luck.

Sounds like a nice project. Can you only choose Shimano or SRAM? It would be cool to go with a Campag groupset, then add Campag wheels with the funky spoke pattern.
