Best solution to this is to
Best solution to this is to draw the 2 bikes using graph paper (or Microsoft Visio if you have it). Use the known angles and draw to scale your current bike. Then draw the new one over it. You can then see the differences and where you need to compensate to arrive at the same position.

This all assumes that you are happy with your current position.

Loads of info to ponder over,
Loads of info to ponder over, thanks for all the replies. I’ve just picked up a brochure for Genesis, but am having difficulty dragging myself aware from the awesome paint jobs on the volant/volare!

Equilibrium looks ace for £899, but suspect it won’t take knobbly tyres.

Wearing less seems like a winner as well.

I’m torn on what I would like
I’m torn on what I would like my next bike to be. If its a Cervelo, I hope not to attract derogatory comments that I’m just a wealthy mamil. £1500 for an R3 frameset (2012 colours) is certainly not out of the ordinary compared to many other options…

Personally I like the hairy legs look for blasting past others. It’s kinda like putting V6 in a Mini and leaving the outside to look completely standard.

Ha, can see I should have
Ha, can see I should have explained myself a little more!

Ok. I’ve only physically got room for 2 bikes. Ultimately, I would like to have a ‘good’/summer bike and a ‘do-everything-else’ bike. Something that will also do light off-road use will keep me going right through winter when my club mates switch to mountain bikes in icy conditions. Would the Tifosi cope with knobbly tires etc?

Hence, while a cheap single-speed did occur to me, it’s not moving in the right direction. I’m a freelancer rather than an employee, so no c2w for me (unless anyone knows how to do this as a contractor with your own ltd co.?)

It would be useful to extend the evening commute a couple of times a week, to maybe 30-40 miles.

I’d take the Pearson – they are lovely looking bikes – nothing wrong with choosing based on the look, that’s what’s going to make you want to ride it on a miserable morning.

It’s also a known quantity for you.

Cool stuff. Is that overall, or the lowest rating for the rides you uploaded? My lowest inidivudal ride was 9.3.

    Sounds like you’ve got good
Sounds like you’ve got good base fitness. I’d suggest taking a proper break (like 10 days) to allow the benefits to ‘take’. (I always thought it was just me that found this, but Wiggo talks about it in his book as well)

After that, you could introduce some shorter, more intense rides. Can you vary the commute route?

When you say you’re ‘new to
When you say you’re ‘new to this’, are you aware that 2 vini fantini riders have tested positive for EPO and that the boss has described the team as being ‘finished’?

If you still want the kit, I guess it’ll be discounted soon!

Well I don’t know the area, but notice that Specialized will be opening a Concept Store in Nottingham. I suggest getting some miles in for now and see how you feel, because your body changes as you progress. You’ll start to get a feel for if/what aches and pains you get, over what distances etc. That way, if/when you decide to get a bike fit, you can go to them with x knee pain, y back ache or whatever, and they’ll be in a better position to assist.

Have to say I disagree with one of the above comments though. Stretching after a ride is good, but I don’t think stretching beforehand is the right thing to do. Just make sure to take it easy for the first 20 mins so that you’re warmed up.

    Hi, sorry, I hadn’t checked
Hi, sorry, I hadn’t checked back for another reply. The speedplays work really well. I think the key thing is that the float is free rather than being under spring retention, so they don’t keep pulling back to ‘their’ preferred position.

I think the heel pain was due to using spinning classes over the winter, or more precisely, using soft-soled gym trainers and aggressively pounding the pedals until I feel the pedal shape against my feet.

    Any progress your side?

    Some good advice on here
Some good advice on here already. Something I would clarify is that you’re looking for volume not speed for now. Don’t worry about going fast, just keep gently building up the distance. That’s not to say that every ride has to be super-long though. A few hours on a Sunday morning with a coffee stop halfway round, plus an hour or two on two days in the week will see you progressing nicely.

If you can afford it, and given that you have had knee issues previously, it would be worthwhile having a bike fit. They cost about £110 or so. Let us know your general location and someone may be able to suggest a suitable place.
