Don’t think you’ll get the full virtual reality climbing experience for anything less than the value of your bike unfortunately, which is probably ‘tail wagging the dog’ a bit. However, what you can do is look at trainerroad.com, that will allow you train with power on the cheap. First you buy a turbo that is on their list of calibrated units (there are loads) then get yourself a £40 ANT+ cadence sensor and follow the instructions. I’ll probably do it myself this winter. Combine with videos of the sufferfest which are also good.notfastenough
Thanks for all the kind
Thanks for all the kind words, however I think I confused matters by mentioning bikes in the same post. Ultimately, my wife is not into bikes at all and doesn’t want one. I’d use a bike/trailer on segrateted cycle infrastructure or on trails etc, but I always feel like speed and the agility of a road bike are one of the things that keep me alive on public roads, so don’t intend to mix the kids up in the traffic. So, we need a double buggy, and have found one which sits the babies side-by-side but can fit through a normal door, as we don’t want/need a 4×4-sized thing for them.
Things are a bit mental now though – we’ve been told to have the emergency labour bag ready from 6 months, there’s all manner of stuff we need to buy, the spare room needs turning into the babies room, the office needs turning into the spare room, the kitchen and dining room are being knocked into one so one adult can keep an eye on two babies while cooking etc, the kitchen’s being updated…madness, but all very exciting.
I do want to still get some time on the bike, but suspect I will probably get none for at least the first few months. (The road back to fitness will then be awful!) We’ve no kids yet, so suddenly having two is going to result in a handful.
I’ll raise a separate thread re the bike, as I test rode an interesting number of bikes and bits.

My middle pocket usually
My middle pocket usually carries my rain jacket, so in this weather that is replaced with a 750ml bottle on long rides.notfastenough
I’d pretty much go with what
I’d pretty much go with what you’ve said above. I don’t think PK should crawl into a hole or anything, but his bad experience (and he was treated badly) has skewed his view to the point that the sport can’t move on.You can see why a team might not like him, but if they distance themselves from him (Team Sky), that suddenly means they are up to something?
You get the feeling that once he’s set his sights on proving something, nothing’s going to be sufficient to prove him wrong, UNLESS the target provides absolutely everything he asks for. In the case of an elite professional sports team, they’ve got better things to do than simply bend over and let a journalist call the shots.
I think his energies would be far better spent casting a wider eye over the peloton, there are far more suspicious things going on elsewhere. That’s before you even get to looking at other sports.

No, no he isn’t the best
No, no he isn’t the best rider ever. He (and especially the team) had good days and bad days, but he was smart enough to peak for the start, so he had his good days while the others were still riding themselves into form. By the time they had that form, he’d sewn it up.Don’t know why I’m even bothering responding, I don’t think you’re willing to listen to anything that you disagree with.

Well you’re looking at the right time, since the end of season sales are starting to kick in. I’d look for something around £800, then watch for the reductions. Think Evans have started, Cycle Surgery will be soon etc…notfastenough
I’d echo the mtn bike
I’d echo the mtn bike comments – I was guilty of the hazard fixation thing, but there are so many hazards off-road that moutain biking cured me.Also, how do you feel about riding no-handed? I couldn’t do it until I learnt to relax, then bingo, skills took a nice little jump in the right direction.
Club rides and a chain gang are also essential. Perhaps find a different club.

@Stumpy – Right, and that’s just the stuff they’re willing to discuss!@daddyelvis, no-one’s suggesting that the peloton is completely clean, but like Paul Kimmage, you seem to have a thing about Team Sky, in the face of a complete lack, not just of evidence, but even of ‘I roomed with x and saw him doping’ rumours. I think there are several more obvious candidates for your cynicism.

I’d suggest continuing to put the miles on what you’ve got for now. I finding that the more riding I do, the more my purchases/upgrades pick themselves based on the problems I want to solve, aches/pains, weaknesses in handling etc.notfastenough

Would be worth getting it checked out by a physio. Might be nothing to do with bike fit.I had exact same thing, I used a foam roller on the outer thigh, to loosen it up a little on the outside, and stood with my legs locked and quads tensed to tighten things up a little on the inside, worked a treat!
Could also try reading as much as possible about fitting, then videoing yourself on a turbo, and playing it back. Slow motion to look for the knee kinking outwards during the pedal revolution etc.

@Tony, I can believe that.
@Tony, I can believe that. As much as I like SRAM, Mark is known for being very precise about his kit. I suspect given the choice, he’d take a Venge with Dura-Ace Di2.If SRAM can spend some time with him when he’s calmed down, there could be an opportunity to improve the product with his input.

Canyon offer a 30-day money-back guarantee if you don’t like it, so long as you’ve only been for a spin round the block and it’s unmarked etc. I’ve got it confirmed in an email but can’t find it.notfastenough

That’s mental. Pro-looking white bike and shoes!Nice new-looking trainers all the time.
Clean car.
Clean clothes.
Stain-proof sofa.
Doesn’t matter if the cat pisses on the kitchen floor – just clean it up knowing the smell won’t penetrate into the boards etc.
Wonder if it’s slippery?

I did this last year and make
I did this last year and make no mistake, the 52 mile route is a ‘fast’ event. The front few groups were at race pace for much of it. I was about 15-18 minutes further back, finishing in 2:30 (38min laps IIRC). The roads are closed and they are plenty wide enough for everyone. The cut-off requires an average speed of 14-ish mph anyway, so everyone is making an effort to the best of their own ability, no-ones pootling along with 3-year-olds in tow.Bikeboy, look out for Chorlton Velo, and give us a wave!
#714, and looking to go quicker than 2:30:52.
