Unfortunately, I’m thinking of one too. After looking around, I’m thinking of the Contour Roam 2. Seems like a good blend of functionality, weatherproof, cost and doesn’t give me the appearance of a tellytubby when mounted on the helmet (ahem – Gopro – ahem).

I do figure that in the event of an incident, the driver will have their version of events, possibly backed up a biased passenger, and I will have video footage and GPS data.

I ride to work daily, then drive the truck all shift, then bike home. I see problems on both side. I read a trucking forum by the name of trucknetuk. They tend to think cyclists are all Lycra wearing loony lemmings on a suicide mission, and that’s the good ones. Some think cycles should only be allowed on the pavement & some never see any wrong in any trucker no matter what. Their biggest gripe is the cyclist that goes up the left side of the truck waiting to turn left, they seem to know it happens but cannot avoid crushing them it seems. I see no meeting of minds anytime soon.

Unfortunately sometimes this place looks the same, if you switch the roles around. Cyclists good, everyone else bad etc.

I live in the same part of the world bikeboy76, I’m only 72kg, but I still use a compact chainset and an 11-28. I might not need it all the time, but I also know that the times I need more than 50×11 are vanishingly small.

Suggest you sort out at least a 28-tooth cassette (think Shimano might do up to a 30 with the short cage rear mech, you’d have to check). The nearest climbs to me (and probably you) are Alderley Edge. Just put aside 60-90 mins 3 times a week, go out to Alderley, then do this:

Up Macclesfield Rd to the wizard
Turn right, go down Artists Lane
Turn right, back to the village
Go along Chapel Rd, then up Swiss Hill this time (left at the T, then come out on Macclesfield Rd)
    Turn right, down Macclesfield Rd
Turn left back along to Artists Lane
Climb that, left back down Macclesfield Rd
Back up Swiss Hill again, then home.

That’s 2 short sharp blasts, and 2 slightly longer but shallower climbs. None are as long as you’ll see on the Etape, so if you can get out on a weekend go up Long Hill, then into and out of the Goyt Valley.

Remember to leave a good few days to recover before the event.

Don’t under-estimate the impact you could make by cutting out alcohol, sugars and bread between now and then. That’s a big change to make all at once, but it depends how much you want it.

    Good luck!

I think that like other road
I think that like other road users, most are ok, but there are few eye-openers, like you described. That one sounds scary for sure. I have been nearly wiped out in the same way by a driver that ‘forgot’ he was towing a caravan.

A while back on an evening club run, we had singled out on a busy-ish road out of Manchester. I was second wheel, and there was a BIG engine noise behind. I shouted to ensure that the fella in front stayed to the left. There was a pedestrian crossing island just ahead with bollards on, and next thing we get overtaken by a full-size tipper-style dump truck going FAST, which had crossed over the road and gone round the other side of the island, simply forcing two oncoming cars to stop while this enormous unstoppable force just thundered through.

I’ve seen boy-racers in Corsas pull off this stunt, but never something as big and hairy as that.

Hi, I’m new here. I’d like some advice, but if it’s not what I want to hear, then please don’t post again. I’d much rather hear from people who may or may not be a similar height, and may be completely different in torso/limb length/flexibility/injuries/riding styles etc, to see what they bought, even though none of us has any idea what the other looks like.

Sorry if this seems overly sarcastic, but a long-time forum member offered decent advice, which IS kinda the purpose of forums like this. Being psychic with regarding to your physique, well, that isn’t. We aren’t cliquey here, it’s very friendly and helpful, but we can only work with what we’ve got.

It’s good that you don’t want to waste a shop’s time when you know you’re not going to buy from them, perhaps a trip out for a third party bike fitting is in order? That way you pay for the service and not feel guilty. You could even be up front with the shop and offer them a few quid or a tray of nice doughnuts or something for their time.

If this really isn’t an option, perhaps join a local club where you can ask the opinion of someone who can see what you look like on a bike? Alternatively, compare the geometry charts of the mortirolo and the Cannondales to work out what your position would be on each. (I’m assuming you’re comfortable on the Mortirolo – if that isn’t the case then all bets are off I’m afraid) I find the easiest way to do this is using Microsoft Visio to plot the angles and tube lengths, overlaying the different frames to give you an at-a-glance view. If you can obtain stack and reach figures for each then the hard work’s done for you anyway. Best of luck with it.

    Haha, sorry! – have updated
Haha, sorry! – have updated the post now to clarify.

I was thinking about Canyon, Cube or Focus, but with the discounts in play, the CF 7.0 was really specced as well, and the CF 8.0 was a bit too much, and is Campag, which wasn’t what i was after. The Cube and Focus are available at Edinbugh Bicycle, but the location isn’t really convenient for me. That might sound like a weak reason but I’m juggling this with the missus being pregnant, having building work done, and still getting into the swing of things in my new job.

Bear in mind as well, that because Trek have gone with the aero frame design for the 5-upwards (and indeed on the 4 for the new model year), the 4 is their current top-flight version of the ‘pro’ frameset, so the frame is basically the 6 series of a couple of years ago.

I do have one actually, and hope to combine that with riding to work. If I can extend one or two of the commuting journeys to an hour and a bit, I’ll still need to build back up to club run distances eventually, but hopefully retain fitness otherwise.
