Canyon 1 1/4 stems are available from Ritchey, Giant and Syntace.

Never had difficulty finding one when I was experimenting with the right ‘fit’.

That said, I agree with with those above who say ‘get the bike you want’. Your heart won’t be happy with a decision your head makes. And the heart has a way of getting its way, eventually.

Regarding the choice between ultimate cf sl and ultimat al slx, this review says that the AL is better:

“For an out-and-out race bike, the AL SLX is very hard to beat. Comparisons will be made between the alloy and carbon Canyons at the same price, but in all honesty we think this alloy bike is the superior ride. Both are sharp and responsive and above all exciting; the AL, however, somehow feels more evolved, balanced and dare we say it comfortable.”

    +1 for the Canyon.

All the consumable parts (chain, sprockets, chainrings, der hanger) are readily available on Ebay/LBS/Wiggle etc.

Unless you prang it majorly you’ll have no need to contact Canyon in Germany. And if you do destroy it, they’ll give you 50% on a replacement! Try that with a budget Pinarello.

I have the Ultimate AL and it’s the best bike I’ve ever had, and as comfy as my Bianchi Infinito on long rides.

And the guy at my LBS rides a Canyon, he knows a good bike when he sees one.

+1 for High5. Think the mixed berry ones are ok, all gels are pretty sickly stuff. Good for that last hill when you are starting to fade.

And take the empty wrappers home with you.

Bear in mind that the normal retail price for a full Ultegra 6800 groupset is £510, fully configurable, at Ribble. Currently out of stock however.

It’s been much cheaper than Ultegra 6700 since its launch.

    Here’s my 41-year old 1973 Raleigh Record 10-speed.

Back in working condition after a rebuild last year.
All original except the new alloy rims (old ones had rusted out).

    Nervar cranks
    Huret derailleurs
    Weinmann centre-pull brakes
    Weinmann brake levers
    Raleigh’s own fake Campag hubs
    Brooks saddle
    14kg!

It’s a model made in Canada for the export market (I got it in Australia as a teenager).

I’ve seen him doing it at Les Arcs a couple of years ago. Absolutely mad, the speed skiing slope starts off at 66% and is groomed to a sheet of ice. And his first couple of rides were on a bog standard Scott mountain bike.

His aero suit with the blended in shoulders makes him look like Robby the Robot!

Eventually he got up to 200km/h and was disappointed with it.

Incidentally the speed skiing slope when left ungroomed as it mostly is has the best mogels around…

+1 for Castelli, you can find bargains on Ebay, the fit is superb once you get your sizing right.

+1 for Giordana, their FR-C jersey is just amazing for cold days that might rain.

And don’t forget Decathlon, they make good stuff for peanuts for city riding and touring.

+1 for the ‘wave them past
+1 for the ‘wave them past when it’s safe’. Works for me. It’s motorbikes I find that flash past specially fast, to prove a point, wound out to 10,000rpm.

    gavcsmith have you thought of
gavcsmith have you thought of keeping your bikes elsewhere? The criminal scum obviously have your garage on their regular visit list.

I used to live in a corner house, burgled 6 times in 3 years, until the plod captured the one junkie who was doing it regularly.

    Always wash your rims with
Always wash your rims with water and dry after riding in the rain.

    For periodic service:

    1. Use vinegar to clean your rims, it gets off huge amounts of gunk, and leaves the rim shiny but also ever so slightly etched to give a good braking surface.

    2. Take the pads out and pry out any tiny bits of aluminium or other debris. Sand lightly with a nail file to get a fresh surface.

That works wonders for my Ultegra brakes, strong performance restored.

I have an Ultimate AL, it’s amazing, the more you push it the better it is. Unbelievably stiff in the BB area while still comfortable on long rides. 75 miles in last time I forgot and thought I was riding my Bianchi Infinito, so smooth is it at speed. The Boardman Team is a great bike by all reports, I suggest you try out a Canyon somehow, so you can compare.
