There’s a great behind-the-scenes documentary of Jumbo Visma’s win in the Vuelta last year on their site. Lots of in-car swearing, soigneurs, mechanicals etc.

Good call, he’s an aerodynamics engineer for Airbus, and has the only 3rd party real-world comparative testing of aero wheels I’ve seen.

I had some Endura neoprene
I had some Endura neoprene ones which have survived now 4 winters, but look very tatty, with gaffer tape repairs and worn patches over the ankle bones, and the kevlar stuff coming off on the underneath, and reflectives peeling off. But, they still work.
This winter I’ve used a pair of Craft RainBooties, which are thinner, and looser, and thus easier to get on and off. They look pretty good after their first year and I’ve only had to sew a reflective tab back on the heel so far.

Yes, you can use the same freehub for 9, 10, 11, and 12 speed Campag. You’d need a new BB but that comes with the cranks.

+1 for the front derailleur
+1 for the front derailleur alignment tool. Also works on Shimano.
But is there any bike that doesn’t have a chain catcher now? Why would you not have one? With one, the chain never falls off the inner sprocket. Not even expensive.

I got an absolutely brilliant
I got an absolutely brilliant but new old stock (2009) Colnago EPS frame a few years back for £1,100. So definitely, for your money, look for a top spec frame that’s a few years out of date, because a £1,000 2020 carbon frame won’t be as good as a £1,000 2015 carbon frame. Hunt around, there are bargains to be had!
Bargains, rim brakes too, both hand made in France:

Yes, Ultegra 6600 was beautiful to use, and it was all shiny silver too. Those were the days! Yes it had external cables but the smooth curve of cable certainly made for a nice shift…

I’m trying to keep up my commuting miles by doing a few circuits of the neighbourhood. I’ve discovered quite a lot of short hills round my way, so have tried to cycle up them all every time. Bit dull but I don’t want to go too far from home as I’m in a ‘high risk category’ for coronavirus apparently (steroid dependent).

I was looking for a 105 10 speed long cage RD for my wife’s bike, which I’d put a bigger cassette on for her… yes, they seem very hard to find from that era, and I paid a premium for a NOS one from Germany.

I’d hunt around on the forums, there are some great bargains to be had. Got myself a pair of Vision Metron 40SLs – current model – for just a shade over £500 last year, they look practically unused and have been absolutely brilliant. Also found a set of Campag Bora One 50s for the best bike for around the same price, the 2018 model with the wide rim and AC3 brake track, again, looked virtually unused. Just be patient and you can find absolute bargains.

Fair enough, but if the front mech is adjusted properly it works perfectly every time. Yes, you don’t want to shift on full power but that applies to rear shifts too.

If you’re commuting you’ll
If you’re commuting you’ll need a double crankset, because there’s so much stop/start at lights and crossings. You want to be able to dump the chain out of the big ring when you stop and then flip back into the big ring a few seconds later when you start again. Very handy, assuming you’re using fairly close ratio cassette.
I guess if you have a single up front you probably use a wider ratio cassette so maybe not so much of a problem. Anyway, my 2d worth.
