If I want to speed up drying I rest the metalware on a bit kitchen towel on top of a radiator.

I cannot understand that on a multistage crossing, where you are crossing a one directional road where all the vehicular traffic has already been stopped at a red, and will remain stationary for at least 30 seconds and maybe 45, why a beg button is ever justified let alone necessary.

There should, of course, be an automatic green man.

Now, on the next leg, over the other lane/s, where there could be traffic coming from up to 3 other directions a beg button seems much more reasonable, to integrate it into the pattern.

And on pedestrian/toucan crossings on non junction roads, long delays between beg and allowance only encourages risk taking at the crossing and people not using them. I speak from personal preference and observation.

Wouldn’t filling the void with huge amounts of concrete and aggregate be an effective solution?

And what on earth is wrong with running more freight trains?…

Wet tarmac can feel a tiny bit sketchy, but the grip on ice, especially black ice, can be stunning.

Noisy, like riding on rice crispies, and slow.

My conti spike claw are also excellent in snow, but then anything with a big knobble does, my surly dirt wizards also work well in snow.

If you bring it in then at least the handlebars start out warm.

I have found over the past week that my front disk brake gets a little more grabby when the temperature gets a few degrees below zero.

For me, Reading and Guildfordish, it’s not yet worthwhile fitting my spiked tyres to the good bike yet. Xtr Vs on ceramic rims, Ali rim brakes can get a bit sketchy. Ultimate Commuter may never get a set, tubeless and expense.

    I have been enjoying learning

I have been enjoying learning about my hydraulic disk brakes (luckily Hope) and low pressure tubeless set up.

My disks require much less maintenance than my XT levered Curve cantilevers, but more than my ceramic xtr Vs (Nokon cabled for even more ease, after after initial setup). After obtaining the corrct bleed kit I can do a yearly change of fluid, hygroscopic fill, and then a later bleed, and I’m getting better at this, and will over the years. Cleaning, lubricating and working it into the piston seals for servicing was initially unexpected, but as often, effort is rewarded. Not grinding through my precious Mavic xc717s is appreciated.

After some horrible experiences changing tubeless tyres, I reduced the quantity of rim tape, from two and a bit to one and a bit wraps, making it much easier, with less hilarity for the better half. And pulling the beads out of the well as much as possible means I only need to pressurise the essential bottle once.  I still carry a tube (heavy) and levers, (I cannot not be me) but in three and a bit years have never even thought of fitting it, not that I could have done it out there before figuring out the tape thing.  Watching holes seal just puts a smug grin on my face, and I took great enjoyment needing to use my one and only anchovy. The noise of the bead seating still terrifies me.

As with everything bicycle, a learning experience and effort is rewarded. I need my bike too much to leave it with the LBS.
