hawkinspeter – for what it’s worth, I’m still haunted by the squirrel on its polyester tray in the chiller at Swanage Budgen’s I saw a few years ago.

PS – I know it can be annoying to chefs when customers smother their creations in this stuff, but please don’t claim there is no British ketchup:

Now come on Rendel, this won’t do at all – you know fine that there’s a number of partial and total exemptions to road law based on who driver is and what they were doing/why.

Doing it for charity (correct spelling: charidee), bleeding to death (and driving away from hospital), going to a funeral or Remembrance Day (complete exemption), attending church, checking on your ‘phone on a poorly relative, children or animals in the car, the presence or absence of the sun, other road users being in the wrong place, driver’s own (completely unknown) medical state and so on.

    Do better.

All the 20mph roads in Wales

All the 20mph roads in Wales set to be 30mph again

And some of those being considered for change as councils across Wales consult with local populations and make decisions on whether to return some routes to 30mph

We’re just past the half-way mark, if we really have to wait 3 years to establish that slower is safer.

Drivers like to exaggerate the position around the review of 20 mph limits, so here’s a summary of what has been decided so far – 35 roads in an area the size of er Wales.

Several other areas still have a number of roads in the works – but that’s the beauty of the default – the time, expense, justification and effort goes into making things faster, and while all that’s happening the default remains in place.

    Cardiff – 4

    Denbighshire – 7

    Monmoithshire – none

    Newport – 16

    Torfaen – 8

Wales’s 20mph speed limit has cut road deaths. Why is there still even a debate?

Research suggests the scheme may be more popular than thought, with consultations dominated by a loud minority

    Dad of William Brown Jr

Dad of William Brown Jr battles Folkestone Town Council over illuminated sign featuring late son’s picture

This is 90% a non-story.  But I thought I’d leave it here as the lad whose image is at the centre of this was killed by a driver some months ago.

If the dad wants to defeat his own objective here, by pissing off the authorities, he’s going the right way about it by (i) installing this sign ahead of permission being received and (ii) stirring things up in the media when a comment (which could have been better worded) by the Town Council is made – the thrust of which he says has no objection to.

It’s now with Folkestone & Hythe BC to determine.

    EDIT/ UPDATE: permission refused

“The proposed signage by virtue of its design, scale, materials and means of illumination would amount to a prominent and obtrusive structure, harmful to the character and appearance of the building, the wider Street scene and the setting of the nearby listed building and which wouldfail to preserve or enhance the setting and special character of the adjacent conservation area”

While we await the “I’m prepared to go prison over this” article, the story begs some interesting questions about public memorials to the deceased – we have them for war dead (not forgetting some pretty striking “fusillé par les Allemandes” memorials in France), we have statues to commemorate individuals for their illustrious achievements; in modern times there’s the spontaneous roadside memorials you sometimes see.

How much of this stuff should there be?

Horror and disgust as drivers ‘squeeze’ through police roadblock after fatal crash

North Wales Police issued a statement in response to the shocking driving

They added: “We will remind you that failing to stop at a road closure and ignoring the directions given by officers may result in you being investigated for the offence of: Fail to stop a mechanically propelled vehicle when required by constable — contrary to section 163(3) of the Road Traffic Act 1988 and Schedule 2 to the Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988.”

Come with me this time to

Come with me this time to Lymington, well-heeled boating town on the south coast, with its pleasant, wide and in part sloping High Street. On Saturdays, half of it is taken up with a street market, which operates with what seems to be an unofficial road closure. Sundays remain free parking. I don’t know what conditions are like in the week.

In the good old days, it was free on-street up to an hour, now it’s £1.50 for an hour (£3.10 for two), after 20 minutes free, plus the so-called grace period – see interesting official admissions below.  All that clock-watching, what a bind – welcome to public transport users’ world, guys.

So the pin-head the traders have got themselves on to here is the £1.50 fee for an extra 30 minutes’ stay that 30% of their weekday car driver customers now have to pay, which all seems  too difficult for them to manage so trade is down; but they’d definitely come and put money over the counter if it weren’t for that, yes siree.

Lymington traders say Hampshire County Council’s on-street parking charges devastating for businesses (paywall)

“I also had a customer with back issues who couldn’t make it to a parking machine and back to her car before she was ticketed.”

“Footfall is massively down and I’ve heard first-hand from several people they don’t come to Lymington any more because of the charges – it’s too much of a flap and a pain for them.”

    County Council FAQs

A 10-minute grace period is also allowed for which effectively provides a 30-minute maximum free period giving a safety margin for those who return to their vehicles slightly after the 20 minutes permitted.

Detailed parking surveys by Hampshire County Council have shown that that just under 70% of vehicles park for 30 minutes or less. The proposed parking changes, therefore, will mean no change for the majority of users.

“The planned changes to parking in the High Street form part of Hampshire CountyCouncil’s proposals to modernise the on-street parking service. The aim is to reduce the scale of subsidy provided from general highway maintenance resources to support parking regulation and enforcement.”

    Town Council consultation response

“Surveys undertaken on the High Street were at a time when local people thought that parking attendants would not be checking and there was little risk in leaving vehicles beyond the free period. Those overstaying are generally local users and occasional enforcement at randomly chosen times would be an effective and much lower cost option than the heavy handed and expensive HCC proposal.”
