    Anyone feeling brave enough

Anyone feeling brave enough to wade into the discussion on the PC’s Facebook page?

I guess we’re all glad (for the avoidance of doubt, as am I )  that the situation isn’t more serious. It’s clearly fortunate that the pc was on the scene when she was.

Perhaps an examination of the role of the van and driver will follow and what actually happened will become clearer later on? “A scene of total devastation” and a “potentially fatal road traffic collision” seem unlikely things to have been caused just by a group of lads on bikes: another contributory factor seems likely.

    There is virtually no

There is virtually no “friendly” use of a car horn, it’s almost always eggey or antsy in some way. Two exceptions I can think of: (I) proper use per Highway Code, like when you can see the bonnet of a car edging  out from a driveway, but there’s no way yet for them to see you or (ii) my wife’s just driving off from a family gathering: toot-toot she goes.  Irritating and predictable, but not meant in an unfriendly way… unless you’re unwitting passing cyclist who’s been harassed, abused and nearly killed  all day just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time (Audi driver definition: in front of me) and this seems like the final straw…

    I’ve built to an Equilbrium

I’ve built to an Equilbrium 853 and to a Nelson Audax (aluminium) frame set. £1700 is realistic, provided you enjoy the shopping element and don’t need to start riding immediately.

If you’re serious about either of your two uses,  consider budgeting £300 for a dynohub front wheel and some German lights.

Prepping your first unprepped frame is an experience – e.g. some headsets just slot in, others need a headset press.  Setting your crown race, your star nut and cutting your steerer to length are all fine with the right tools and a bit of experience or guidance.

When I built a frame on a course, I got conflicting advice about facing the BB – no point doing it before painting it vs the paint goes on evenly – so I didn’t do it on the course with all the wear-withal present and ended up paying extra at the painter’s.  Other frames never got faced.

    Good luck!

I watched a You tube on this

I watched a You tube on this (jammed ultegra shifter) and the guy found a bolt on the underside of the shifter that secures the innards down to the housing.  He tightens this up and problem solved.
