Double figures! We’ve made it to episode 10 of the road.cc Podcast in association with Cervélo, and as it’s Halloween we thought we’d share some of our scariest cycling stories. There’s also the less scary tale of Travis and his cat Sigrid, who have become a bit of a famous sight on the streets of London.
> What can be done about the spate of bikejackings? road.cc Podcast Episode 9

The seeds for an episode discussing scariest moments on a bike were sewn after Pete posted on the road.cc forum about his crank failing mid-ride (see above). Thankfully he was ok, and this led to us asking our Instagram followers about their most frightning times on a bike. We were flooded with loads of excellent responses, and not all of them mechanicals… we’re talking being held up by a bogus policeman with an Uzi in Kazakhstan before being accused of dealing drugs in Thailand, getting caught on a tree branch by the loop of your backpack and slowly choking, plus a very near miss with a lorry going downhill at 40mph. Discussing their scariest moments and reading out the highlights from our call-out are Jittery George Hill, Jack-O-Lantern Sexty, Monstrous Mat Brett and Jo Bloodcurdling Burt.
After Emma Silversides tells us what improvements she’d like to see in Van Rysel’s Quick-Zip cycling bib shorts following a disappointing experience, Jack and Screamin’ Simon MacMichael chat to Travis Nelson, who has been melting hearts across the capital since he started riding with his feline companion Sigrid on the front of his faithful fixie. Find out what reaction Travis and Sigrid get when they’re out together, and how riding with his cat has changed Travis’ cycling.

Having just hurtled down Kidds Hill, I was breaking and leaning into a sharp right hand turn when the retention bolt holding my saddle in place decided to snap just before I reached the ford…It was a long, slow and careful ride home trying not to get too intimate with the seat post.
Exiting a tunnel to see two
Exiting a tunnel to see two cars side by side occupying the whole width of the road coming towards us at about 70mph. I fell off into a gateway, and the two behind me went into the hedge. The days before I used a camera unfortunately.

Audax 200km, mid february, freezing tempertures, freezing rain/hail, could barel;y hold on to the handlebars let alone operate the gears or brakes, woefully underprepared i’ll admit, we hit a downhill, I career down it desperately looking for the rear brake realise I’m not going to make the corner, then I just entered a netherworld where somehow, without any concious effort from myself I avoided 3 parked cars, skipped onto the pavement skimmed a couple of rows of hedges and landed in the third. No injuries, was too tired to care and carried on. I do recall tears coming down my eyes nearing the end.

I was once asked to pay more than £5 for coffee and cake. That is a true story.

Scary experiences? Cycling on
Scary experiences? Cycling on a remote route in South Africa. Came across a pack of baboons. By the time I realised, I was in the middle of them. I’ve never sprinted so hard in my life. I don’t know whether they chased me, I didn’t look back for the next mile.
Wish I’d had a computer with me; it could have been my first and last Strava KoM.

Got tailgated by an HGV, that was pretty scary.
Reported it to the police, it’s been almost 6 months and no feedback so I’m probably OK to post the video soon.
