Work to begin on CS4 in summer 2019

Transport for London (TfL) has announced that work is to begin on Cycle Superhighway 4 (CS4) in summer 2019 – over a year after an overwhelmingly positive response to a consultation. The route – 4km of which will be segregated – will run from Greenwich to Tower Bridge.

As well as a two-way segregated cycle track along Tooley Street, Jamaica Road, Evelyn Street and Creek Road, the project will feature five new pedestrian crossings and upgrades to more than 20 existing pedestrian crossings.

There will also be a complete overhaul of Rotherhithe roundabout, which features on TfL’s Safer Junctions list and has one of the worst safety records in the capital.

There will be further consultations on the junction of Southwark Park Road and Jamaica Road and on the Lower Road section – work on which will not begin before 2020.

Will Norman, London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, commented: “I am really pleased that the construction of Cycle Superhighway 4 will get underway in the summer.

“The overwhelming support during the public consultation shows there is great demand for a safe segregated route, which will help enable more people to cycle. Pedestrians will also benefit from new and improved crossings, enabling more people to leave their cars at home and leading to reduced congestion and cleaner air, which will benefit the whole community.”

The London Evening Standard reports that a proportion of the funding will come from the now-abandoned £43m project to pedestrianise the western end of Oxford Street. That money has also been reallocated to CS9 in Chiswick and CS1 in Hackney.
