North Yorkshire Police have appealed for witnesses after a motorcyclist was killed and a cyclist left with life-threatening injuries following a collision near Settle on Sunday morning.
The pair were travelling in the same direction on an unclassified road between Wigglesworth and Rathmell at around 10.39am when the crash happened.
Officers said that the motorcyclist, a 36-year-old man from Rochdale, Greater Manchester riding a Suzuki GSX-R motorcycle, was approaching the cyclist from behind when the collision happened.
Both he and the cyclist, a 61-year-old man from Colne, Lancashire, sustained life-threatening injuries and both were taken to hospital by emergency helicopter.
The motorcyclist subsequently died at Leeds General Infirmary, while the cyclist remains in a serious but stable condition at the Royal Preston Hospital..
Police praised members of the public who stopped to administer first aid at the scene.
They have also appealed for anyone who saw the collision, or who can remember the way either the cyclist or motorcyclist was riding beforehand, to come forward.
Anyone with information is requested to call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2, and ask for Pete Stringer, or otherwise email pete.stringer@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk, in both cases quoting reference 12180112782.

There must be a way to pin
There must be a way to pin the blame for this on to the cyclist somehow… give it time…
Well they are definitely
Well they are definitely looking. Wtf has how the cyclist was riding before the incident got to do with it?
I’m thoroughly fed up with motorcyclists buzzing me at 60+ just inches from my handlebars. Like all road users some in their number are cunts deliberately out to scare cyclists
I’ve no sympathy for the motorbiker the incident was entirely in his hands. Really hope the cyclist pulls through

Well that is by far the shittiest comment on this site for some time, possibly ever. Well done.

Incredible, isn’t it? Awful.
I’m not sure this is a suitable article for comments. If anyone has any information relevant to the specific incident they know where to send it.

Somebody’s son, nephew, and possibly somebody’s father and they won’t be coming home ever again
You’ve aportitioned blame on him without any evidence of who was at fault
How would feel if it was a close relative who wasn’t coming home, time to take a look in the mirror.
Hmmm, I’m sure they will call
Hmmm, I’m sure they will call this an ‘accident’ because one party has died.
Wonder why the police haven’t put out estimate’s of the motorcyclists speed, you know given the propensity for those on high powered machines to do exactly that, it’s not out the ordinary it’s the norm, much more so than car drivers.
Noticeable after looking at other reports in the past on similar they haven’t asked for the manner of behaviour of the person whom was struck by someone else. Or are they saying that somehow the cyclist did a u-turn into the face of the motorcyclist, otherwise this is surely a simple case of motorcyclist going too fast for conditions/actions of vulnerable person who has priority ahead. Also who as we know is allowed to be anywhere in the lane for whatever reason and must be given space when overtaking in case they need to swerve around potholes or are caught by a gust of wind.
Be interesting to see the outcome of this!
It’s not immediately clear to
It’s not immediately clear to me how the cyclist could be to blame, given that the motorcyclist was approaching from behind. Short of suddenly turning right without signalling. All the usual crap drivers blame us for – riding too far out, wobbling, changing our line to avoid glass/potholes – are the sort of things that causes the HWC to tell other road users to give us space, and are the sort of thing that most responsible crotch-rocket rider knows that they have to deal with themselves.
Most motorcyclists are fine around bikes (“2 wheels good, 4 wheels bad” sort of thing), but more than a few do seem to enjoy riding too fast, and a few do buzz cyclists for fun.

Maybe, but you don’t know the facts, you weren’t there, it could have been a 50/50 blame on each
A pheasant could have flown up and caused the motorcyclist to swerve and hit the poor cyclist.
Don’t pre judge what happened unless you were there and witnessed what happened to both these victims
