Two diversions on London’s cycle superhighways – compare and contrast

To dismount or not to dismount…

Everyone loves a garbled diversion and we’re sure you’ll agree that the one pictured above is a beauty. It’s on Whitechapel Road on Cycle Superhighway 2.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

They’re digging up the East-West Cycle Superhighway to fix a leaking pipe between Blackfriars Bridge and Temple.

As Twitter user Matthew Sparkes points out, there’s no "cyclists dismount" for this diversion.

And because you all enjoyed that so much, here it is from the opposite direction, in the dark, courtesy of aviewoflondon.

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

Those 2 videos show quite reasonable and nice diversions. Narrow, but protected from motor traffic.

These cycle lanes are a waste of money... no one will use them.

"Cyclists Dismount" Why? Can't I ride on the road?

Well you could if you could navigate your way around the cluster f*** of temporary street furniture between the cycle lane and the main carriageway.

CS2 is technically just a bus lane half painted in blue - this is quite possibly an improvement

CS2 was actually upgraded earlier this year and is now kerb-segregated along most of its length. There's a picture of it on this article http://road.cc/content/news/131079-long-awaited-upgrade-londons-cycle-su...

And some more details and real pics here: http://road.cc/content/news/161801-tfl-unveils-junction-designed-elimina...

Wow look at that drain cover fitted with the grating in-line with the direction of travel at 35 seconds in the first video!

The drains actually have criss-cross grates along the EWSH - a nice touch and I think that one is no exception, just doesn't show up well in the video.

All neatly summed up in a single, thankfully brief, document:

TAL 15/99

http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20120606202850/http://assets.d...

"Maintaining Access:
Wherever possible, access should be maintained for cyclists in both directions throughout the period of road works, avoiding more hazardous diversions."

Perhaps the Whitechapel Road people haven't read it.
