Carol Boardman, the mother of former Olympic and World Champion cyclist Chris Boardman has died following a collision with a pick-up truck in North Wales.
North Wales Police confirmed on Sunday afternoon that Mrs Boardman had died in hospital from injuries sustained yesterday in a road traffic collision with a white Mitsubishi L200 pick-up truck at Connah’s Quay.
Police say they were called to the incident at the roundabout on Mold Road with the junction of Ffordd Llanarth at 1.54pm yesterday afternoon.
Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them on 101, quoting reference number U104385.
In a statement issued via North Wales Police, the Boardman family said:
In the early hours of Sunday morning, our mum, Carol Boardman, died from injuries sustained in collision with a car whilst out riding her bike in North Wales.
A racing cyclist of some standing in her day, she gave up competitive riding when Lisa and I came along but she never lost her love of the bike or of competing. A stealth combatant and full of energy; mum was one of those individuals who could quietly turn anything into a contest. On the10-minute walk to my Nan’s she would often force us to skip – it didn’t feel as strange then as it sounds now – which inevitably turned into a dog-eat-dog contest, a woman and two children frantically speed-skipping along a suburban pavement with a blue garden gate as the winning post.
God knows what it looked like to people driving past.
Our mum was the most positive outgoing person you could ever hope to meet and her generosity of spirit inspired everyone she met. Many of our childhood memories involve my mother and the outdoors, walking out over Hoylake sandbank, swimming in the deep gullies, or hunting for fossils on Llandegla Moor in North Wales. Wanting to share her passion for cycling, even well into her seventies, she often took groups of young novices out on their first forays into North Wales.
She leaves behind Keith, her partner for more than half a century, Lisa and I, and a large, loving family. We cannot yet conceive of a world without her in it.
Our thoughts are with Chris Boardman, who in recent years has emerged as an eloquent and effective advocate for cycling safety, and his family.

How terrible that a man who has given so much for cycling and stuck his neck out in the media to make cycling safer should lose his mum in this fashion.
I hope that he continues his good work with more enthusiasm than ever.

Shocked, saddened, angry and appalled – yes, all of the above.
Suprised? Unfortunately not. Without wanting to pre-judge what happened in this tragic incident, all too often drivers treat people on bikes as an inconvenience who shouldn’t be on “their” roads.
RIP.
So, so, so sad.
So, so, so sad.
A quick google maps search shows the roundabout to be just one of those awful designs – every cyclist will recognise it… Loads of space, badly used, far too fast entry and exit speeds.

Regarding the site of the collision; it’s a three-way roundabout on a hill, descending towards Connah’s Quay, if cycling from Mold. It’s a road that I’ve cycled on.

I’m sorry, but for once in my life I am going to go against political correctness and ask these questions:
1.Why do cyclists believe they should be safe on the UK’s roads which are already vastly overcrowded with much larger vehicles?
2.How on earth can cyclists that carry children on their bikes or in little trailers behind, expect to be taken seriously as responsible parents when exposing their kids to the mass of urban traffic with such flimsy transport?
3.Have cyclists turned into fantasists who believe the entire motor-driven traffic of these hideously cluttered islands called the UK will pull over, give way and/or priority to wobbly but pugnacious and self-righteous two-wheeled bullies?
I hope not. There has to be a better way.
