Vuelta Stage 16: Frank Schleck wins, Joaquim Rodriguez takes race lead

Just 1 second separate top two on GC ahead of tomorrow's rest day...

Katusha’s Joaquim Rodriguez, who started Stage 16 of the Vuelta today 1 second behind Astana’s Fabio Aru, now leads the Spanish Grand Tour by the same most slender of margins. The stage was won by Trek Factory Racing’s Frank Schleck.

The latter attacked from the break on the last but one of the day’s seven categorised climbs. Team Colombia’s Rodolfo Torres countered, but was dropped by Schleck with 3 kilometres remaining of the 185 kilometre stage from Luarca.

Schleck, aged 35, now adds a Vuelta stage win to two previous stage victories in the Tour de France.

After tomorrow’s rest day, Stage 17 sees a 38.7km individual time trial in Burgos, where Giant-Alpecin’s Tom Dumoulin, fourth overall 1 minute 51 seconds behind Rodriguez, is expected to take time back from the Katusha rider and Aru.

As if Dumoulin can keep up with the mountain goats! Rabbit off there like! I hope not though.

When you consider the time period that PED's give advantage for (longer than the ban period), and the fact that they provide an enhanced level of training, is it any wonder that people are uncomfortable watching Frank win. This feels as equally unsavoury as when Vino took the front in the Olympics. 7

Until WADA, IOC, UCI, USADA, UKAD, etc. Agree and ratify a four year ban for first offence, with continued out of competition testing, then it's going to be difficult to have confidence in proven cases.

I must admit when I spotted him in the peloton over the weekend I was amazed. Didn't know he was still riding. I knew there was the big fuss about Andy but just assumed Frank had left too.

Now c'mon, you've had your dig at Frank, surely it's time to get on about Dumoulin? 35

Dumoulin is the Chris Horner of 2015. Does that work? Roll up, roll up, get your two-for-one cynical comments here.....

He won from a break and was haemorrhaging time to the GC guys - if you're so desperate to twist the facts and be cynical just for the sake of it, maybe you should find another sport to whine about.

Nothing to see here... move along, situation normal.....

No calls for power data, bike x ray, blood tests etc etc?

Takes the focus off Astana briefly I suppose...

An amazing return to form for the ageing Schleck.
