One gold for Bethany Shriever and a silver for Kye Whyte made it a worthwhile watch for the former Oasis frontman. Some might say, in the BMX you’ve got to roll with it…Bethany did just that for a famous win that’ll live forever for all who were up to see it. The GB athletes are almost certainly far too committed for any cigarettes & alcohol celebrations, but whatever they choose. I’m sure LG will be proud… DA x

Tadej Pogacar signs 'longest contract in cycling history' as UAE Team Emirates reward 22-year-old for second yellow jersey

Tadej Pogacar: 22 years old, two Tour de France yellow jerseys, six Tour stage wins, 29 pro wins, two Tour de France KOM jerseys, Olympic Games bronze medal, one Monument and now…a bumper six-year contract with UAE Team Emirates. No wonder young Tadej looks so stress-free.

His team and pro cycling reporters are touting this as one of the longest contracts in the history of professional cycling and so far, nobody can think of anyone who got more than six years. It means Pogacar will be 29 by the time he could leave UAE Team Emirates. 

In a team press release, Pogacar said: “I’m really happy to be able to commit my future to the team and stay here for the next years. I feel at home here, it feels like a big family. This team is a really good fit for me and I am fortunate to say that I have not only found colleagues but friends. I’m excited for the years ahead and what they will bring, hopefully more success for me and for the team. I hope we are inspiring lots of kids to ride bikes.”

The political cock-ups keep coming…On Wednesday, it was Liverpool’s climate emergency chief promising his commitment to cycling infrastructure in front of the cycle lane on West Derby Road which was about to be ripped out. And now yesterday, Liberal Party councillor Steve Radford popped up triumphantly holding two of the removed wands aloft like a beaming athlete celebrating Olympic gold…He even had a medal around his neck…

Some have been quick to point out certain inconsistencies with the front page of the Liberal Party website…

Former Liverpool footballer Jamie Carragher, who once got himself into hot water for spitting at another motorist on a similar stretch of the city’s road network, welcomed the news of the bike lane’s removal and asked for “the same on Stanley Road in Kirkdale”.

Others on Twitter asked if Cllr Radford would be so triumphant the next time the road is congested or if a road user is injured on the stretch.

Christina Mackenzie breaks Land's End to John O'Groats record

Christina Mackenzie has done it. 51 hours, five minutes and 27 seconds after leaving Land’s End, the Stirling Cycling Club rider reached John O’Groats, smashing the 19-year-old record for the fastest female LEJOG. The provisional time is more than an hour-and-a-half faster than Lynne Taylor’s record from 2002.

Mackenzie was up on the schedule since the opening 100 miles and extended her advantage as she passed into Scotland yesterday lunchtime. After a short stop for clothes and to warm up after the punishing Highlands section, she pushed on for the flatter final miles this morning, reaching John O’Groats just after 11am. Chapeau.

Geraint Thomas says he will listen to any team interested in his services for 2022. The Welshman’s current deal with Ineos Grenadiers expires at the end of the season and is unlikely to be extended.

Having won the 2018 Tour de France, Thomas has struggled to repeat the highs of his greatest achievement on the road, crashing out of last year’s Giro d’Italia and struggling with crash-induced injuries at this year’s Tour. 12th in the Olympic Games TT capped off a disappointing summer for the 35-year-old, who says he is looking forward to taking a short break from the sport.

“It’s just been tough, especially mentally. People like to stick in the knife in a bit when things aren’t quite going your way, but you just need to stay positive and try and keep going. It’s been tough but I’m looking forward to getting away from the cycling world now,” he said.

“I have a few offers but I’m just waiting to speak to one other person. We’ll try and get that resolved quickly because it’s starting to play on your mind, you just want to get that sorted, but we’ll see. I’m just open to listen to everyone. Once we’ve got everything on the table, we’ll go from there.”

It’s always good to keep it classy, even when you win. Even when your win is removing infrastructure helping your constituents travel safely by bike. Steve Radford missed that memo. He must have been out parading ripped out wands at that point. If there’s one lighter side to this it might be a relieved Ed Davey, leader of the Lib Dems, avoiding getting caught in the crossfire, meant for the Liberal Party involved here. Poor Ed was taking a social media kicking from one user who soon realised he had the wrong liberals…

Just a joke or another unnecessary cyclist-bashing dig? Have I Got News For You weighs in on Highway Code changes by having a pop at those on two wheels

What do we make of this then? The replies and comments are a bit spicy, but in fairness, many hit back at HIGNFY…

Alexander Wooldridge Smith, for example, said: “All jokes aside many motorists think they have right of way over cyclists in all situations. I predict more death by car from drivers who never read the highway code again after they pass their test.”

Richard Skidmore smacked down the ‘us vs them’ mentality: “Crappy drivers make crappy cyclists, crappy cyclists make crappy drivers. They think they own the road and the rules are optional for them regardless of which mode of transport they are currently using.”

It’s Friday, I get it, you just want to grab a can and have a laugh, enough of this serious stuff…Allow Kevin Follit to provide that (typos included free of charge): “All car driver’s have had to pass a test, therefore are all highly skilled at what they do, they also pay for the privilege of using the UK’S perfect ,well maintained,pot hole free roads.as for cyclist’s: well,i rest my case”

    I caught the BMX racing last

    I caught the BMX racing last night.

    On the one hand, you just want to laugh: it looks like bears on clown bikes.

    And yet you watch it and think how easily it could all go badly wrong.

    Very, very skilled to do that.

     

    (the other weird thing was watching them going up-and-down so quickly along the track, it almost looked like distortion on my TV…).

        I started off on a bmx in the 80’s and every now and then, look into the olympic park bmx taster sessions…but FFS, the bikes seem so small for adults!!!!

    Plans to create ‘road user hierarchy’ are part of £338m package to boost cycling and walking across Britain

    The DfT said the new version of the Highway Code would include a “hierarchy of road users” that ensured those who could do the greatest harm, such as those in vehicles, had the “greatest responsibility to reduce the danger they may pose to others”.

        Nope.  Tried googling and only managed to find something about changes to the HC in relation to motorways and other high-speed roads (which isn’t really relevant for this conversation).

        According to the DfT press release, the final document isn’t due to be published until the autumn, but you can see the proposals they were consulting on at https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/review-of-the-highway-code-to-improve-road-safety-for-cyclists-pedestrians-and-horse-riders 

        I’m particularly keen to see what they’ve done with Rule 66 (~never ride more than two abreast), as I wasn’t convinced by the proposed suggestions in the consultation.

          Theres a government response
          Theres a government response to that consultation now, which goes into lots of detail about the responses theyve got, my impression is they havent written the new rules yet, it cites rule 66 specifically will take account of feedback and road safety experts and stakeholders will help finalise the wording. So I guess watch this space, as it commits presenting to parliament in September after the summer recess, which is only a month away.

          Theres also an updated gear change document,light on details but some interesting snippets like it says theyve paused infilling of rail structures by Highways England…

            Good spot – don’t think the government response was there when I posted the link earlier. Fingers crossed re: revising Rule 66. Cycling UK initially supported the proposed changes to that rule, but apparently changed their view after people (including me) wrote to them flagging that the proposals might be read as putting the onus on cyclists to single out whenever a motorist might want to overtake.

      I like the explicit mention of cyclist priority at junctions although I thought that traffic travelling straight ahead already has priority at junctions (mainly cyclists that get left-hooked though).

          The consultation said this:

          “introduce a responsibility for drivers and riders to give way to pedestrians waiting to cross a side road or junction, or waiting to cross at a zebra crossing”

          It’s a brave pedestrian that steps into a side road knowing that they have priority. It’s a bit like that Jeremy Vine post withe the ped scurrying out of the way of the taxi even though they had right of way. The change is, I believe, that at the moment the ped has right of way if they’ve started to cross. The new rules will be that they have right of way if they are waiting to cross.

            The new rule means drivers have to give priority to pedestrians waiting to cross, whereas the existing one only requires them to give priority to pedestrians who are already crossing.

            The new proposal is “Rule 170 on junctions to advise drivers and riders give way to pedestrians waiting to cross and to remain behind cyclists and motorcyclists at junctions even if they are waiting to turn and are positioned close to the kerb” so the priority is the peds carrying on in a straight line over cars turning. However, I won’t be stepping across any junctions in front of drivers with the full confidence that we all are following the same HC.

      My concern with this kind of change, irrespective of its rights and wrongs, is how effective it will be and the timescale.  The vast majority of drivers out there will not have read a version of the HC in the last 20/30/40/50 years so any new changes will take a similar timescale to roll through unless the Gov tackles the thorny question “How do HC updates get taken on board by the people actually driving”?  I would vote for some regulation that forces an HC refresher/online exam at least every 10 years, but I have yet to hear any senior politician mention similar.  So just words, in a doc, with widescale ignorance amongst the masses.

        I agree that education is going to be tricky (and I will be cautious about exercising any new priorities on day one of the new code) but it doesn’t necessarily rely on people reading the entire HWC. I imagine this being in the national media today marks the start of a media campaign, with features on public service broadcasters, ads on buses, bus stops etc.

        now with photocard licenses needing renewal every 10 years, and online testing of highway code possible this seems like fairly low hanging fruit, unfortunately still too high for those in charge of road safety in this country.

          As I think I’ve said before, watch a video and answer a couple of simple questions to ensure that you were paying some attention. Must be easy to arrange and you’d hope that drivers would understand their responsibility even if they don’t do anything about it.

            I agree, I think it would be easy peasy lemon squeezy (unlike getting a good trade deal after Brexit) I just don’t think it will happen (very much like getting a good trade deal afetr brexit)

            There’s usually some kind of reasoning attached but in this instance there’s just a bit of hand-waving at the revised Highway Code which really doesn’t address the issue at all.

            With the tabards, I’d guess (haven’t seen the petition or response myself) that they could point at the potential costs and benefits and state why they think it’s not worth pursuing.

            To be fair, the tabard petitions generally don’t even warrant a response as they don’t get the requisite 10,000 signatures.

The problem is that they’re not addressing the key problem of drivers using aggressive behaviour against cyclists and instead they’re talking about road safety (not that I don’t like a bit of road safety). It implies that they’re happy for motorists to continue to shout obscenities at cyclists for imagined transgressions even though that can have a huge effect on whether people choose to cycle or not.

            I don’t think we’re really disagreeing, but… while I agree that revising the code and educating people about it doesn’t directly address drivers who use intimidating behaviour, surely it could help in reducing the number of perceived transgressions that lead some people (wrongly) to behave that way. So, to put it simplistically, rather than run a campaign which says “punishment passes are dangerous and scary and put people off cycling, so please don’t do it”, I’d prefer a campaign which says “cyclists are entitled to use the road and it’s your obligation to pass them safely”, i.e. making clear there is no infraction to ‘punish’ in the first place.

            Why not both? I’m quite happy for there to be a road safety campaign that explicitly states cyclists/scooters rights on the road, but I think there’s also a need for a driver anti-aggression campaign.

            “Here’s Brian. Brian thinks he owns the road and frequently shouts at other drivers and toots his own horn. Look, here he’s shouting at cyclists for not using the cycle lane” – camera focusses on totally rubbish cycle lane with maybe a fallen cyclist with loads of glass in their tyres. “Brian’s a proper twat which is why his wife is leaving him, but Brian takes out all his anger on the road. Don’t be like Brian, share and care.”

    That’s a hugely impressive

    That’s a hugely impressive effort for Beth and Kye. They’ll give a tremendous boost for BMX as a sport in the UK. They’re both role models for younger riders and I know they’ll both bring more riders to the sport. I’ve met Beth a few times and Kye a few more times and they’re both really positive people. I know Kye’s dad very well and he’s played a big role in getting his son on the podium, so I am sure he’ll be absolutely over the moon. I messaged Kye’s dad earlier but I’ve not heard back yet and he’s probably sleeping it off after being up all night. Everybody involved in BMX in South London is delighted for the pair of them as FB has absolutely lit up.

        Wasnt that more to do with the controversy of selection back in 2016 ?

        When Kye’s brother Tre should have been picked,but wasnt, I didnt think there had been any public complaints on selection this time, but I dont follow BMX that closely.

          Nope, someone mentioned on here that Quillain Isidore had been overlooked as he went to the test event and seemed to indicate it was a mistake or down to “who you know”. I remember asking then why it was a mistake as Kye always seems to do better in the recent full year rankings.

            But you certainly cant argue with the end results.

        It was me and I said the pick for the UK’s second male BMX rider should’ve gone to Quillan Isidore. He’s the second rated UK male BMX rider after Kye. Politics were in play. 

        But all my BMX mates here in South London are going nuts. Kye and Beth are great ambassadors for the sport. The Whyte and Shriever familes have done a hell of a lot over many years getting Kye and Beth where they are today. BC may be getting the praise now, but it was the familes that put in the hard work over the years.

      You size a BMX by the length

      You size a BMX by the length of the top tube, to make sure your knees don’t hit the bars basically. If you’re say 180 tall you can ride a Pro XL (like mine) which will have a top tube of 21″ or 21.25″.

    Such a shame that Alexei

    Such a shame that Alexei Sayle went the wrong way from CMK station. Right at the beginning he mentions he forgot his Redway map and wasn’t sure where they were – I was shouting at him all panto like ‘Behind you!’. Could have got out to Loughton and had much nicer scenery than around Conniburrow and Downs Barn!

    Also – we have probably one of the better segregated cycling infrastructures in the country and you could still see that he had to stop all the time to cross the road and some of the Redways looked like they had just been bombed! Very little upkeep from the council.

    A spokesman for Deliveroo said Spain’s employment rights law was not the determining factor, but added that it had resulted in an earlier withdrawal from the country.

    The Spanish government announced plans in March to legislate to give workers at food delivery companies and other online platforms more employment rights after a landmark legal ruling, as the first EU country to do so.

    Known as the “rider law”, the changes will mean a worker is presumed to be an employee rather than self-employed contractor. The changes will also force food digital platforms to inform delivery riders about how computer algorithms and artificial intelligence affect their working conditions.

    Liberal party councillor

    Liberal party councillor Steve Radford; I hope the local cyclists and green campaigners will be getting together to award him a proper medal at the next council meeting, for climate sabotage and stupidity.  Maybe two, one for each category.

    It’s like climate change isn’t happening, that there aren’t unprecedented floods, fires, droughts, temperatures etc, etc.  I’ve no idea what the Liberal party’s stance on transport and the climate emergency are, but if this councillor is following them, we’re doomed.

    EDIT: just google the lib-dems policies on transport and cycling, and to call them lukewarm would be a compliment.

    2nd EDIT: I’ve just sent the LibDems a message, asking for their views on this councillor, and does he reflect their policies.

    3rd EDIT; having been informed that the Liberal party still exists (who knew?) I’ve just checked their cycling policy; this is it:

    “Bicycles do not pollute or require much space for parking or passage.  Liberals support the increased use of cycles and seek ensure better cycleway provision in built up areas.  Rail travel and cycling are complementary and so we call on the rail companies to draw up a positive cycling policy for the carriage of cycles on all passenger trains.”

    At least it’s mercifully brief.

            In May 2021 the party’s only candidate at the 2021 Scottish Parliament election, Derek Jackson in the Glasgow Southside constituency was escorted from the count after arriving wearing arm-bands, yellow stars, and harassing Humza Yousaf, a candidate in the nearby Pollok constituency.[26] Upon ejection from the count the candidate and his supporters were photographed appearing to give Nazi salutes.[27] The Liberal Party immediately suspended Jackson and issued a statement distancing itself from his comments and actions and apologising for any offence he may have caused;[28] Jackson was expelled from the party on 9 May.[29]

            So, not very liberal by any normal definition, though he was expelled.

            They currently have 8 Councillors spread across two English Councils.  So my guess at 50% wasn’t entirley accurate, but near enough.

            Not quite. They have 8 city/district/borough councillors nationwide, so closer to 12.5%

            Not so much a party, as a quiet get together – “The Not-So Liberal Quiet Get Together”, not very catchy but LGBTQIA+ seems to have done very well, so they could make it in to an unpronouncable abbreviation.

Hope Barcelona keep the transport improvements (they've been making for a while) coming! Better streets, more infra to help active travel where necessary. And while it's a major investment (though can be lower operating cost than busses) maybe more trams where they can. That may be more effective in making places active travel friendly and replacing taxis than mass public bike hire. They've a good start with 6 lines already.

I think this is a positive story. They're not getting rid of public hire bikes - they're expanding their in-house one. They're merely kicking out cowboys who've shown they've a lack of interest in the game they claim to be playing. It seems logical that companies whose business model is to extract (venture capital) money by invading public space are even less likely to make the efforts to keep things in order than a local "in house" scheme. (After all the "bikes and riding" part of these schemes always *costs* money, they don't generate it.) So not surprising their experience shows those firms are not particularly motivated to follow the rules - especially when scrapping for "market share". It's nice the European Cyclists’ Federation is thinking about tourists also (i hesitate to say "follow the money...") - as they note, where it's safe to cycle locals will largely get their own bikes. Tourists aren't going to stop coming because lack of public bike share - I think this is mostly a "nice to have" ("hey - why don't we go on one of those bikes there? ").

I'll counter that by saying the Bryton 750se I have drives me nuts at times. Inconsistantly picks up on routes created on Komoot and the app re-syncs every few seconds when trying to set up the device and sends me back to the home screen. The most infuriating one is that I turned live track on. Once. It now won't turn off and repeatedly flags up the live track is starting, and then disconnecting every few seconds whilst riding. I haven't timed it but it wouldn't suprise me if 10-20% of the time the the screen is covered with an error message. That's been about 6 weeks now. Other than that it's great :/

What is the point of the fancy air sensor if it can't account for changing weather conditions?? If all you care about is a delayed approximation of aerodynamic watts in steady conditions, you don't need any special sensors for that. Just your speed on a decently flat course is enough to approximate rolling resistance and drivetrain losses. And the rest must be aero. If you assume a less aero body position at the same watts, your speed will drop while rolling resistance also drops, which means approximated aero watts goes up. And that's enough to demonstrate what you've shown in your testing protocol ("I sat upright and the number went up a little while later").

Your correction is accurate - it's almost always been "the (lack of) thought that (doesn't) count". "Massive" - less than a billion a year spent on active travel (trying to catch up / building a network across the entire country) Not massive - 6 billion every year (2026-2030) spent on road *maintenance* of existing "already built, goes everywhere, very convenient" road network for inactive travel Ultimately the reason "cycle infra" is *needed* is those unbelievably colossal amounts spent every year (and for more than a century now) on making mass motoring not just viable but apparently the "best choice" for most journeys. As the Dutch and others have shown, the majority of people *are* prepared to cycle and even mix with very light, slow local motor traffic *if* cycling is also made safe and convenient for the whole of their journey (including secure parking at both ends). (The history of the financial drivers of the current situation are a complex topic but note that while people complain about "crumbling roads" and underfunded motor infra - with some reason - by us continuing the fuel duty escalator freeze (for example) we're actually helping motorists pay *even less* for that activity / subsidising more of the cost of driving than ever.)
