The alarming trend of spectators acting idiotically at major bike races shows no signs of slowing down, after one ‘fan’ was branded an “absolute moron” for riding his bike on the route and latching on to the back wheel of race leader Pauliena Rooijakkers during Sunday’s Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes.
The bizarre incident occurred with around 32km remaining at the hilly Belgian classic, on the tough unclassified climb that follows the iconic ascent of La Redoute, shortly after Fenix-Deceuninck’s Dutch climber Rooijakkers launched a dangerous attack.
As Antonia Niedermaier (Canyon-Sram Zondacrypto) bridged across to Rooijakkers, the television footage showed a male amateur cyclist sitting on the baffled Dutch rider’s wheel, sporting a baggy, ill-fitting version of the UAE Team Emirates jersey normally worn by Tadej Pogačar and his colleagues.
The intruder, after noticing Niedermaier’s presence, and with Anna van der Breggen and Cédrine Kerbaol also bearing down on him, moved to the other side of the road, before he was eventually ejected from the course by a race marshal.
Replays of the incident showed the UAE Team Emirates ‘fan’ emerge from the side of the road, seemingly ready and poised to jump on the course, as Rooijakkers, a podium finisher at last year’s Tour de France, passed, before sprinting to latch on to the Fenix-Deceuninck star’s wheel.
Unsurprisingly, the spectator’s baffling, and potentially dangerous, actions have been condemned across the cycling world.
Commentating on the race for TNT Sports, former British pro and current AG Insurance-Soudal sports director Dani Christmas said: “It’s absolutely ridiculous that you can have a spectator riding alongside the riders. He needs to be taken off the road immediately.”

“You can ride along the bike path, but interrupting the race, and getting amongst the riders, is just ridiculous. Gladly the marshal has taken them off the race route,” added her co-commentator Marty MacDonald.
“It’s not funny, it’s not big, and it’s not clever. As we always say, respect the riders – come and watch the race, and respect the riders. If you take out the rider, it could end their season, with that skill level.”
On BlueSky, cycling writer Tim Bonville-Ginn was even more scathing, writing: “There’s always some absolute moron bloke that has to ‘be funny’. What an arse.”
Some, however, saw the funny side, as Florian wrote on Instagram: “At least he could have pulled instead of drafting.”
Fortunately, the course invader failed to affect the outcome of this year’s edition of Liège-Bastogne-Liège, which saw AG Insurance-Soudal’s Kim Le Court secure a breakthrough victory on the road, the Mauritian outsprinting Puck Pieterse, Demi Vollering, and Kerbaol in a tense, thrilling finale.
Mauritian champion Le Court, a stage winner at last year’s Giro d’Italia, has been one of the peloton’s most consistent performers since making the jump from mountain biking at the beginning of last year.
But the 29-year-old finally turned that string of classics top tens into a monument victory in Liège with a perfectly judged ride, after finding her way back to the front as the leaders dithered over the top of the final climb of the Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons.
As world champion Lotte Kopecky began to struggle under the pressure of Vollering, Pieterse, and the constantly attacking Kerbaol, Le Court was able to follow over the top of race’s final kicker, and had enough in the tank to burst off Vollering’s wheel and easily hold off Pieterse for a brilliant breakthrough monument victory.
“To be honest when I bridged the gap on Roche-aux-Faucons, I really felt strong compared to the others,” the Mauritian champion said at the finish.
“When I bridged to them, I saw they were really suffering. Of course, I was suffering too but for me to make that effort to bridge to them I knew I had maybe a bit more legs. I just kicked and never looked back in the sprint. I could see Puck’s wheel but I just didn’t stop.”
Amazingly, the UAE ‘fan’ wasn’t the only course invader at this year’s edition of Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
With about 104km left of today’s men’s race – won in dominant solo fashion by world champion Tadej Pogačar, who secured his third career victory at La Doyenne after attacking 35km from the bottom of La Redoute – a van driver pulled out onto the course in front of the breakaway, before being swiftly ordered to the side of the road by the marshals, who certainly had their work cut out today.
“Hold on, what’s happening there? I don’t like that – someone’s ordered an Uber and decided they should be in the face,” said commentator Rob Hatch. “Deary me, not what we want at all.”
As noted above, it’s been quite the season for idiotic actions by cycling spectators. Most notably, at this month’s Paris-Roubaix, a roadside fan hurled a Visma-Lease a Bike-branded bottle at Mathieu van der Poel, hitting the Dutch star in the face as he soloed to his third consecutive victory at the Hell of the North.
The bottle thrower, who handed himself into police later that night, admitted that he was drinking before the “impulsive” incident and said he was “really ashamed” of his behaviour.
Just over a week before, another spectator was seen on television spitting at Van der Poel during the E3 Saxo Classic, with Belgian police later confirming that the culprit has been fined but will face no further action.

Also good to see men and women sharing (parts of) the course.

Not the major concern – that
Not the major concern – that’s rider safety, with respect a close 2nd, but having a rider on your wheel, even not pulling, has been shown to have a slight drag reduction effect. So there’s that minor point too.
