Aldi have stepped up their involvement with sport in the UK recently, partnering with the Team GB olympic team and starting a healthy eating initiative across schools, with triathletes the Brownlee brothers as their most high profile ambassadors.
The Pro Cycling range suggests that Aldi want to be taken seriously as a sporting retailer, and looking at the features of the kit there are all the benefits you’d expect from higher priced gear. The £19.99 jersey has a laser-cut mesh and cuffs, reflective print, YKK zip and a race fit. The bib shorts have an Italian-made gel chamois pad and a laser-cut legs too.
Aldi have men’s and women’s kit in the Pro range, with the bibs coming in at £24.99 a pair
As well as clothing there’s a range of accessories, including a £5.99 track pump, £9.99 set of lights and even electrolyte tabs at £2.99 for 20, cheaper than any we’ve found online from other brands. It’s not the first time shoppers have been able to throw some discounted bike kit in with their fruit and veg at the German-owned supermarket; Aldi’s flash sales, such as Garmin GPS computers for as little as £60, have become something of an event when they happen, often selling out of buzz items in hours when the word spreads.

Back to the Aldi stuff, I’m not sure I’d pay £25 for the bib shorts. They’re using the pad that they’re putting in everything now including the £5 ones and it is NOT comfortable for 4 hours as they claim. Maybe I’ve got the wrong combination of arse and seat for them but I’ve had enough after an hour and really wanting to get off after two. My chinese Rock Racing rep stuff with a generic pad is miles comfier.

I always find the Aldi (and Lidl) stuff false economy – I would buy it because it’s cheap and reasonable quality, but then always go and buy more higher priced but better looking gear instead, and leaving this stuff hanging in the wardrobe. Plus they have really reduced the mens stuff they do in size small, which narrows it down for (li’l ol’) me.
Good heads up about the pad though, just because it’s made in Italy doesn’t mean it’s great. And I am really put off by the track pump given the last I got frm Aldi lasted about three months.
The one great bargain I still use is the Garmin Edge 25 which they were selling for £80, but things like this tend to be few and far between. The go-pro copy I got for £50 has sat around the house for the past six months, just too damned clunky to use.
Might buy the hydration tabs though, surely they can’t bugger those up?

Could you give us a little more background on the sample size and the clubs they have attempted to join? The cycling ‘club’ I am a part of has generally formed as friends got into cycling, then the odd work colleague has joined in, two chaps with the foulest mouts and least morals invited their daughters and a wife has subsequently joined the fun. The latest lady in question drops the odd f-bomb, was impressed by a topless male cycling the other way recently and enjoyed Sir Hoy’s legs on Sunday.
As for the images used, I think Aldi has actually gone a little less sexual than many, the lady and man are certainly above average looking but more in the ‘nice family next door’ mode, certainly less sexualised than a recent photoshoot between Mr and Mrs Kenny. The males on here that are offended on the behalf of feminists are ridiculous, as is any suggestion of sexism or relations drawn to racism. Commenting on the looks of a a person selected based on a look that matches some strange brand value is not sexist and I’m not sure that if dottigirl (for example) commented on the male in this picture I would be offended, or worry about the plight of native americans 300 years ago… You’re also assuming those commenting are heterosexual and thus supposedly sexualising the image – this is extremely narrow minded!
