When Graeme Obree failed to break the Hour record in 1993, he famously took a second successful shot at it less than 24 hours later after a bit of a rest and a huge bowl of cornflakes. Giuseppe Marinoni is going to give it a couple of weeks before trying again after he fell just one lap short – but he is 80.

In October 2012, Marinoni, the founder of Quebec frame builder Cycles Marinoni, set the 75-79 age group Hour record at the Montichiari Velodrome in Italy, covering 35.728km.

Encouragingly, Inside Halton reports that his attempt on the 80-84 age group record actually saw him go further than this – but he was nevertheless a lap short of the 38.657km covered by France’s Paul Martinez in June.

Tony Girardin, who made a film called The Fire in the Frame (trailer above) about the cyclist, said: “He’s going to try again in two weeks in Mexico. He’s in good shape now so he’s got to keep trying. The story continues.”

Marinoni made his attempt on a bike he made for close friend and Canadian Olympian Jocelyn Lovell in 1978. Lovell won gold.
