Former Garmin-Cervélo rider Daniel Lloyd and his wife Lorraine have postponed until later in the year a charity ride, Cody's Challenge Hampshire, that was due to be held in the New Forest on 3 March in memory of the son of Northern Irish rider Stephen Gallagher and to raise money for some very worthy causes. Cody Gallagher died of heart disease just a few weeks after his first birthday in December 2009.
We'll keep you posted on a new date for the ride just as soon as we get it, in the meantime here are some details of what you can expect when it does go ahead.
The Lloyds’ ride, which covers 100km and starts and finishes at Avon Tyrell near Bransgore, Hampshire, also aims to raise funds for the Mending Broken Hearts appeal from the British Heart Foundation, which Lorraine works for, and the Children’s Heartbeat Trust in Northern Ireland, which supported Cody and his family throughout the youngster’s illness.
There will also be a 5km off-road route that is perfect for families (but not, we're told, for road bikes) and which they can ride as many times as they want. The full, 100km ride costs £30 for adults to enter and you can register online here. Registration on the day opens at 9am, with the ride starting at 10am and riders setting off at five-minute intervals.
Daniel, who retired from racing at the end of last year and now combines commentating with a DS role at Team IG-Sigma Sport, had originally planned to take part in the ride.
However, contractual commitments to commentate on Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-Sanremo mean he is unable to do so after organisers RCS Sport moved both races forward by a week. He told us that next year’s ride will be scheduled for a date that enables him to participate.
Stephen Gallager, who rode for Sigma Sport-Specialized in 2010 and was previously at An Post-Sean Kelly, won the GC in the FBD Insurance Ras in 2008.
Since Cody’s death he has been very active in raising funds for the Children’s Heartbeat Trust and other charities, including organising sportives in Northern Ireland and climbing Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro in Kenya, in 2010.
In 2011, he set up Forme Coaching with Mandy Collie and Dan Fleeman.

It is, apparently, "packed with high visibility reflective details on back and shoulder."
