You've heard the voice, now ride the Phil Liggett sportive

Event takes in some classic Peak District climbs from Milk Race era

The CTC has announced details of the Phil Liggett sportive which will take in some of the most iconic climbs in the Peak District on August 7.

Known to many as ‘the voice of cycling’, Phil Liggett, former CTC president, has been commentating on road racing for over 25 years and is currently doing so at the Tour de France for ITV 4.

Phil was also the race director on the Milk Race for more than 20 years and the Peak District was a favourite area for him to bring the race to. As a result, the Phil Liggett Sportive was born and 2011 is the twelfth year the event has taken place. The event now forms part of the nationwide 2011 CTC Challenge Ride and Sportive series which has so far had three successful events to date in Dorchester, Guildford and York.

Regarded by some as one of the classic sportives in the UK, the course takes riders through the beautiful Peak District from Sheffield and takes includes climbs at Holme Moss, Winnats Pass and Monsal Head.

There will be two routes available, 100km and 150km, with the well established longer route taking in over 2600m of climbing. Previous participants will vouch for the quality of the course and either distance will give you a challenging day out.

The courses will be fully signposted; have fully stocked feed stops, electronic timing, mechanical back up on route and a broom wagon should it all go wrong with your bike.

Each entrant will receive a limited edition event cap and there will also be a similarly limited edition jersey to purchase at the event. All entries received before July 31 will be put into a draw to win a one of these limited edition jerseys and caps signed by Phil himself on the day, please see website for details of the competition.

Entries can be made on-line or by post with a discount for CTC members and group bookings for teams of four or more.

Entry fees:
CTC member £17.00
Non member £27.00
Any team of four £60.00

As with all CTC sportives, all profits go back into cycling projects.

Instead of a signed jersey and cap, they should get Phil to sign his luggage, then the winner could say they have a genuine "suitcase of courage."
