At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Assos has long been a byword for quality, and its standout products have always been its bib shorts, considered by many cyclists to be simply the best that (quite a lot of) money can buy. Costing £100, the T.MilleShorts_s7 offer exceptional comfort and fit for the money and might just be the best bib shorts you can buy at this price.

The T.MilleShorts_s7 are a new entry-level design for the company, and combine much of the design, features and padded insert of the neoPro_s7 shorts previously tested by road.cc and which they now replace, but with a more accommodating fit. Top-level comfort for those not sharing the same BMI as Chris Froome, then.

Key to the comfort of the shorts is the purple padded insert. It's one of the best on the market. It comprises 8mm-thick memory foam with a waffle and perforated composition, providing the dimpled surface, to increase the breathability and increase comfort. The way the pad is attached to the shorts is different from the norm. A 'goldenGate' construction sees the chamois stitched to the bib shorts only at the front and back, leaving the midsection to move independently of the shorts; it also removes seams from a potentially delicate area.

The chamois feels instantly comfortable the moment you pull the shorts on, even before you get on the saddle in a way that few other shorts manage. It's without a doubt one of the most comfortable padded inserts I've tested, providing superb seated comfort without much bulk at all.

assos T.MilleShorts_s7 shorts5.jpg

Assos says the shorts are designed for long rides in the saddle and a couple of seven-hour rides are testament to that claim. No issues whatsoever on those long rides. The goldenGate might sound like a gimmick but it does appear to create a more harmonic interface between the chamois and your undercarriage, improving the freedom of movement and eliminating friction and chafing concerns.

The fit of the shorts is excellent. The focus on making them a little more generous in the waist has worked well, striking the balance between the need to be slightly compressive to hold everything in place but not restrictive. The wide, flat bib straps are placed out wide which further enhances the comfort as does the low waistband – which makes nature breaks easy – and there's no unwanted pressure over the shoulders, and the mesh back panel adds breathability.

assos T.MilleShorts_s7 shorts1.jpg

The bib shorts are made from the company's own Type.429 Lycra and it is soft to the touch with an expensive feel about it. It's a supportive fabric with a bit of compression noticeable, and the panels are cut in such a way that the shorts fit perfectly in every area. It's a durable and hard-wearing fabric, too: with hundreds of miles racked up on and off-road and dozens of machine washes, they're not showing any sign of distress. The Lycra copes well in the heat or really high-intensity rides that produce a lot of sweat and feels noticeably drier for longer than some other shorts in the same testing conditions.

> Buyer's Guide: The best cycling bib shorts

Wide hems with gripper tape keep the legs in place with no discomfort at any point during a ride, and contribute to the overall comfort. Branding and details on the shorts are low-key, just a few small Assos logos. A couple of reflective details on the backs of the legs is a nice touch for commuting and evening rides when you want a bit of extra visibility.

For many, £100 is still a lot of money to spend on a pair of bib shorts, but if you want to make an investment in your cycling wardrobe, especially if you've got some big long-distance rides planned this summer, you really can't go wrong with the T.MilleShorts_s7 shorts. Comfortable, well fitting and durable shorts.

Verdict

Seriously impressive comfort and a great fit puts these shorts up among the best

Wish they still made a long leg again!
As you go down the sizes the shorts get mighty short!

Each pad is different in the Mille, Equipe, Cento and Campionissimo.

The Mille here has the same pad as the old NeoPro. That, like this, is an every day short. It is perfectly at home on a 150 km ride as a 30 km ride. It uses propritory 8mm memory foam, with the waffle pad over the top.

The Equipe expands on this, with a slightly differnt construction to the side 'wings' of the chamois and a more sculpted area at the front. These also have 8mm memory foam priopritory inserts.  The cut of the Equipe is smaller and racier.

The Cento has the 10mm pad, the more 'comfort fit' of the Mille, and KuKu penthouse (a very soft section at the front for your gentlemens bits). The 10mm memory foam pad earns it the moniker of the 'long distance' short. But that doesn't mean that any of the other shorts are low mileage designs!

The Campionissimo goes back to an 8mm construction, with a woven fabric instead of the materials used in our other shorts. It is a racing cut like the Equipe.

The pad in my T Neopro S7 is the worst I've ever used.  The only reason I've not chucked them away is the amount they cost me.

Maybe it's the shape of my arse but the 'floating' golden gate nonsense means the pad just rides up my crack and I'm forever trying to put it back in position.  Doesn't happen on any other shorts.  Doesn't happen on my older Assos with proper stitching.  Happens no matter what I do to try and stop it moving.

Sorry to hear this. Usually this is a symptom of wearing a size too large of the short. With the correct size, there isn't any excess material, and this can't happen. Please contact us at infouk [at] assos.com and we will see if we can advise you further. Alternatively I would encourage you to contact some of our dealers, go to our London store or to a test event for a proper fitting.

Thanks for the feedback, maybe I'll try a smaller size though they don't seem to have any excess material.  Buy mail order, take a punt on size, sometimes you win, sometimes you don't.

The good thing about road.cc reviews is that they give the size of the reviewer and the size of the garment tested.  Though S for the best part of 6' doesn't match any Assos size charts I've seen.

has the pad changed in thickness from the neopro model it's replaced?

IIRC, the neopro was aimed at short jouneys, and the thinish pad seemed to reflect that, but this new model is aimed at longer rides as well as short so I guess Assos have changed the pad?

It looks to be a similar/same 8mm pad used in the Equipe, the equipe just has a racier and more premium cut and materials. The only pad that is different from assos is the cento pad which is 10mm

They're a size small. The leg length is perfect for me, they line up with my tan lines... I'm not a fan of this fashion for really long shorts that extend down to the knee

I have the Cento S7 shorts and habu tights. Have been wondering whether this new model is worth as a second pair. Sounds like it is. Bibs are the one thing I believe you should spend a worthwhile amount on a comfortable pair.
