Video: Thief chops down a tree - so he can steal bike locked to it

Brazen theft happened in Changsha in China's Hunan Province...

A thief in China chopped down a tree – so he could steal the bike that had been locked to it.

The brazen theft was caught by CCTV cameras in Changsha, Hunan Province, reports Asia Raw News.

The man runs over to the tree- a young one, perhaps, but with a trunk that still has a diameter of maybe six inches – and starts cutting it with some kind of saw.

He briefly out of screen before returning to deliver the coup de grace that sends the tree crashing to the ground.

Then he lifts the bike off what is now a stump, slings it onto the back of the scooter he arrived on, and makes off.

While not all thieves would go the extremes shown here, you should always lock your bike to something fixed … and that can’t be chopped down.

For the same reason, don't lock your bike to a sewage pipe. Yeah, had to deal with that once thanks to a neighbour.

Looks setup to me: camera is too wobbly to be a (fixed) CCTV !!

Think he is filming the screen with his phone.

People should check that any tree they lock their bike up to is not gaffer taped. It could be a sign that it has been tampered with.....

I remember that article - the bike racks had been cut and re-joined with a section of pipe so that any bikes could be removed easily.
