Mondays at this time of year mean we spot an inevitable video posted to social media of silly goings on involving cyclo-cross riders and a lot of mud – and, we’re happy to report, this week is no exception.

Daniel Brickenden from Glencullen, County Dublin, is the rider shown covered head to toe in mud in this video as he approaches what is less a puddle and more a small, mud filled pond.

He stops short of it and dismounts, but any thoughts he will tackle the hazard gingerly this time round are dispelled as he dives into it head first.

Earlier today, he changed his profile picture on Facebook to one of him cleaning himself up after his impromptu mud bath – he’s still smiling despite his experience, though getting out on the bike is enough to put a grin on most of our faces.

He's in good company – at the weekend, we featured a video shot by Rob Hayles back in 2012 showing then road world champion Mark Cavendish falling into a huge puddle while the pair were riding in Essex.

And here’s a video from earlier this month showing how mud and a slippery slope caused huge problems for competitors at a cyclo-cross race.
