Harrogate police launch witness appeal after injured cyclist found in street

57-year-old sustained serious head and facial injuries, but cause remains a mystery

Police have issued an appeal for witnesses after a cyclist was found lying unconscious with serious injuries in a street in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, last week.

The 57-year-old, who has not been named, had been cycling along Otley Road last Thursday morning heading towards the Prince of Wales roundabout, and turned into Beech Grove, where he was found by a passing doctor after apparently coming off his bike.

Sergeant Ian Pope of the Harrogate Road Policing Unit told The Harrogate Advertiser: "It's not clear at this stage how the man came off his cycle, and we are appealing to members of the public who may have seen the cyclist riding down Otley Road or who witnessed the actual incident to get in touch.

"He has sustained serious injuries, and we need to establish if he fell from this cycle or if he was involved in a collision with a vehicle," added Sergeant Pope.

The cyclist, who comes from Harrogate, was treated for serious head and facial injuries at Harrogate District Hospital and has since been moved to Leeds General Infirmary.

Witnesses and anyone else in the area from 8am to 8.15am last Thursday are asked to get in touch with North Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060247.
