At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

The Asgard Metal Bike Shed for 29ers is a shed big enough for four bikes and a whole lot more. It keeps your bikes safe, and dry and has loads of spare room for your kit too.

Bike storage, or lack of it, can sometimes be a hinderance. Cycling is somewhat addictive and you will likely own more than one bike. Depending on where you live, secure storage and garden space may be in short supply. A regular wooden garden shed isn't much of a thief deterrent either. The Access Plus is a shed that fits in small spaces and will make opportunistic thieves think twice.

Being built specifically for 29er mountain bikes means it has to be big; a 29er's longer wheelbase and fat tyres mean it can be about 10 inches (25cm) longer than a road bike. The Metal Bike Shed for 29ers is much like the Asgard Annexe bike shed, but with a lot more space. The sheer length of the shed (all 7ft 7in/2.3m of it) means it will take any bike. It's made of galvanised steel which does make it extremely solid and heavy (19.2 stone/122kg) but it's still easy to build.

I am 5ft 2in. The shed is 4ft 4in/1.34m tall at its highest point. I thought it was going to be difficult to build just because of its proportions versus mine. However, with the help of another woman, we looked at the instructions and just got on with it. The panels all had labels on them so you knew exactly which bits attached where. It took about 40 minutes to build.

Security seems to just ooze out of this shed. It has a lid that lifts up as well as easy access doors. The doors are held secure by a long steel bolt locking bar. The lid then comes down further securing the doors and is held shut with two disc locks. These locks are covered by a steel plate, meaning that anyone trying to get than them with bolt cutters wouldn't stand a chance.

With a price tag of £475 it does seem like a huge investment. Rest assured that the sheer quality of the build will soon put you at ease. Not to mention that it comes with a 10 year guarantee.

Once it was up, filling it was hardly hard work. It took one 29er, three other bikes and a storage unit. You can get hooks (separately) that go along the rear of the shed so you can hang up helmets, locks etc. There are also shelves you can purchase for additional storage. There is ample floor space left over so you can simply keep all your kit on one place.

The swing doors make getting bikes in and out really quick, which is great when it starts to rain. One small gripe here is, that when it is wet and you open the lid, you do get a few drops of water on your head if you don't stand back. As I said though, this is a small thing.

The Asgard has an attached base, so unlike other regular sheds, it really is secure from the outside. All the screws are placed so they are only accessible from inside the shed, meaning it can't be taken apart unless it's unlocked.

Verdict

Superb bike storage shed that will last for years

Do they come with racks or rails or does anyone know if these can be retrofitted?

One of the photos on the sites seem to show them but...

Hi CT as far as I'm aware hooks and shelves are bought separately. I just bought my own unit to hold all my kit though.

Superb product. Got the 6 bike shed - actually fits 7, possibly 1 more but not tried. Always very dry not a hint of damp. Plenty of storage space.
Get one of these rather than bike insurance -will pay for itself - and keeps muck out of house!!
If you're gentle with doors its not noisy.
Seems to blend in well with surroundings.

Is that 2.3m length overall including sides, or useable space inside?

(says the chap riding a 2.2m-long recumbent...)

Hi there, I have just measured inside the shed and yes the 2.3 length is the length of that base inside. But the way the sides fit on means there is a small lip/overlap inside so you lose 3cms at either side. Though I think your bike would fit in at an angle. It would be worth an email to Asgard and asking them.

Thanks for a good review - looks like a well designed, well made bit of kit. Considering you'd pay over £100 at the DIY sheds for a flimsy plastic garden storage unit it seems a reasonable price (albeit not cheap).

Postitive comments from Asgard owners too - the acid test!

Definitely looks far better than the Trimetals box I've got which could very easily be bolt cropped, although probably still much better than a shed. Mind you, I'm about to move a fourth time with that and don't think I'd fancy 120+kg to shift every time I move house.

Not sure I'd agree with that statement. I've just taken delivery of a Trimetals version. It's no lightweight, and it comes with a Loss Prevention Certification Board security rating of 1.

It's also very quiet. No clunking and scraping when opening it up. It was a bit of a b***er to assemble though.

I have bought this sized Asgard.
Under normal opening and closing - there can be quite a noise. But if you open & close it carefully I would expect you would be able to open it with very little noise at all.
I've owned mine for 4 years now and its still rock solid. I don't leave helmets or clothing in there (only in case of damp - never tried it) - but everything else has remained dry and protected.
I did notice mildew on a WTB saddle after a year of not riding the bike and leaving it in the storage.
Things that would corrode - don't seem to corrode in there - so it isn't that damp - but this could be also down to where you position it.
Mine is positioned on the shadey & damp side of the house.
Wide bar bikes will be more troublesome to put into the storage and maximize the space - unless you loosen the stem and turn the bars.
Also - the supplied padlocks - are OK - and it would take a determined thief to gain entry - you *may* still want to take additional precautions inside the box.

Can anyone comment on how noisy these are in use? Do they bang or rattle when you open and close them?

I had a standard model for eighteen months before I moved house. Mine wasn't noisy - over what you'd expect from something made of heavy duty metal. But as per previous comment, as long as you're not flinging it around, it's fine.

Mine was positioned on the north side of the house, but got some sun every day [assuming the sun was shining]. I never had a trace of damp. In fact the only water that got in was off the occasionally not-dried bike.

Much of this is to do with the design. It's pretty watertight if you follow the very clear instructions. And there are smart touches - like the roof section that overhangs the doors, so rain can't sneak in.

We moved house, and I'd have taken it with me without hesitation, but the new home has a large garage... N+1.

Yes, do they clang a bit and I would not be using it at 5am. They are superb though and can be used with an anchor if required.

No idea about damp as I just store spare bikes in mine, the bike in use stays in the house with my kit, etc.

Hi Jon, I made the mistake of underestimating how loud it could be and the doors clanged open/shut. However you quickly learn not to bang them about (for your own ears as much as neighbours).

Putting bikes in and out naturally makes a little noise, but it's nothing that's too bad at all.

Yes, I was wondering about the damp / condensation angle too - can anyone advise whether this is an issue....???

Looks nice. Unfortunately where I live they would steal the shed and the ground it is on.

Question about the shed. Won't helmets and other items of cloth attract mold growth due to the damp?

Hi Max, I've got helmets, buffs etc just now in it. I've not had it long enough to know if damp will occur but it's good to read that other people have said there's are pretty watertight.

It's been in heavy rain and warm sunshine and I've never seen any from of condensation inside.

I've got the "normal" bike version of this, and am super-happy with it. Would heartily recommend Asgard products myself.
