Trek Project One competition: the shortlist

We've trawled through nearly 6,000 bikes to find the ones we like the most. And here they are...

Well we've stroked our chins and looked at nearly 6,000 different bike designs, and in the end it's come down to this. 25 designs that made it through the initial cull, then the subsequent weighing-this-one-against-that-one discussions to finally land on the shortlist as the best* of the bunch.

Some people have clearly missed their vocation, getting quite a few designs into the long list, but we've picked 25 different designers for the final cut. And one of these bikes dun gone get made. We'll be opening voting next week so you can pick your favourites.

In the mean time, have a scroll through them and tell us which one you like best. If you want to take the time to tell us that we're a bunch of colour-blind morons that wouldn't know a beautiful bike from a hole in the ground, that's fine too. In fact, we demand it.

*yes, we know yours was better.

Are all these bikes with pink in the colour scheme WSD models? If so, most of these were done by husbands/boyfriends, which is a bit of a cheek as the bike won't actually then go to the winning designer.

I'll be rooting for #12 then on that basis. Think I know of the entrant, don't personally know her, but I suspect she might do some "chicking" on it too.

Without meaning to offend the creative skills of the shortlisted,
that is a pretty poor shit list guys.

not so keen on all the flame designs!
#3 (Stuart Knipe) is my fave as it matches my club colours.
I'd go for an orange one personally but none of the ones here quite do it for me.

What a shame you've all missed out on the chance to see my black, red, gold and green 'Trek Bob Marley'.

I'd apply this logic...

- disqualify any design incorporating flames, obviously not cool 3
- disqualify any design with non colour matching saddle and bar tape, again not cool 3
- disqualify any design that prioritises deep section rims over higher spec gruppo, again very not cool 3
- and of course disqualify anything with any brown in the colour scheme, need I say more...

& #14 gets my vote

why do carbon bikes almost always look so ugly?

Dave - your decisions are your decisions. As competition setters and rule-makers, that's entirely fair.

we're just saying you may need to visit the optometrist, like 3

Hey folks

I'm a noob here, well, I've been lurking for a while. Mine is #15. Now I've told you that I guess I probably lost some votes, haha!

Not sure why mine was picked and some could say it is 'boring', but I thought there was enough of a 'cool' stealthy look with a dash of electric blue to give it some zing when I entered it. I don't think anyone would be too embarassed to ride it.

Ignoring my entry, I quite like #11, 13, 14 & 20

Is the fat lad at the back allowed to ride a machine like this anyway? That is me.

As i'm eyeing up the competition, a couple of them are growing on me a bit more. Still prefer my #22 overall, but then i suppose thats the whole point isn't.

Reckon Darren Collard's is the smartest, although in the real world, I'd end up replacing the bar tape with black as it would just look crap once scuffed and dirty.

Oh I'm not against pink - no-one with as much Rapha as I have has any right to be! - but I tried white bar tape because my bike looked really cool... for all of 5 minutes. Hence I go for black tape and saddle, although I tend to think you can get away with it with tyres.

In the past I have matched the colour of tape and tyres just to give the bike a different look.

Is there a prize for the one on the shortlist with the least votes? Looks like I'll win that one.

If there is a prize for best lobbiest then Darren C gets it.

Some interesting options however how did the entries with the carbon rims meet the required budget limit? I tried for ages but couldn't get anywhere near the limit.
Did I miss something?!

Of course my pink and black and all pink options were way better;)

Thank you notfastenough 41 , I've been a little crafty in my design as the pink has been limited to both the tyres and 'bar tape, which can cheaply and easily be changed. But all the same, it makes it standout a bit too as it is!

Voting hasn't started yet, you never know what will happen!
The comments here don't necessarily reflect what the final outcome will be.
Lets hope that there are runner-up prizes too, we deserve some for being on the shortlist from nearly 6000 entries!
Good luck.

It is possible to get carbon rims if you downgrade the groupset.

I'm still in a state of disbelief that mine got through...

That's right, I also did this on one of my entries, but on my shortlisted design I upgraded the groupset to Ultegra and put in a Ceramic bottom bracket to reduce the weight even further. 16 3

I shaved a few quid off here and there. There were a couple of paint options not as expensive as the rest, same goes for the bars if i remember right.

I matched my entries to my club kits, which was surprisingly difficult to do.
If anyone else did likewise, you have very boring kits.
*grumbles*

Having played the numbers game and entered "quite a few" times I'm chuffed to be on the shortlist! (Even if my best design didn't get through - take a look at no.5 and you'll see what I mean!)

If I win it'll be my first venture into road cycling, a charity salary isn't conducive to having cash to splash on a lovely chunk of carbon. (Sympathy card well and truly played).

Good luck everyone!

I entered a few designs and also found it impossible to spec up the groupset and wheels without breaking the £3200 budget.

I also found that there were many beautiful looking designs entered by others, yet many of those in the top 25 I find somewhat tasteless. That's not taking away from a handful of very handsome looking steeds that have made it on to the shortlist.

Maybe it's just my way (and a few others on here) of releasing some of those bittervibes. My opinion is the shortlist is pretty disappointing, apart from the odd few.

Whinge over. 20

P.S see the attachment for my idea for the next "design your own ride" competition.

Whinge definitely over.

Obviously all of mine were better.

Some of those are hideous, others just plain boring. The world would be a pretty dull place if everyone thought the same though so congrats to those who made the short list, I know which one I'll be voting for and I hope whoever wins enjoys their new bike and - in some cases - that the ridicule from the general public dies down one they get used to seeing your new steed in the flesh.

Those are all hideous. What's with all the flames?

I might be biased.. but mine was much nicer!
