Romero to abandon track for the road?

Proposed changes to Olympic programme could see ITT focus

Olympic Women’s Pursuit Champion Rebecca Romero is thinking of switching from the track to the road in the 2012 Olympic Games in London, according to a report in the Guardian over the weekend.

Romero is considering focusing on the individual time trial in 2012 if proposals announced last week by the International Cycling Union (UCI) to overhaul the track programme for 2012 are adopted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) when it meets in December.

Her coach, Dan Hunt, told the Guardian that the proposed changes, which would see the individual pursuit, points race and Madison events dropped and a women’s team time trial and omnium event for men and women added, would force the British cycling team to change its priorities for 2012.

Hunt said that Romero “is in cycling to win individual medals,” adding that “you wouldn't have to be a genius to figure out that the road time-trial would feature on our radar with regards to Rebecca."

The team time trial could be an option, however, and Romero won silver in rowing as part of the Team GB quadruple sculls crew in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens before switching sports to focus on individual events.
