The controversial bike lane, which has been criticised by Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg among others, is believed to have tripped up over 100 pedestrians due to its confusing kerb heights and colours, with 40 of those locals seeking compensation
“They’ve been making promises of ‘jam tomorrow’ for cycling for 10 years,” the local cycling group said, after plans to install protected bike lanes were scrapped by the council due to “budgetary constraints”
However, a local cycling group says the new bike lane will “revolutionise people’s journeys”, coaxing them out of their cars, and giving “thousands” of children the “choice” to cycle to school everyday
The "absolute carbuncle of a shed" has attracted the ire of some seaside residents, a councillor claiming the installation of seven bike parking shelters "boggles the mind" — even if some more relaxed locals have told the ranting critics to "chill out"
The scheme’s opponents also questioned Transport for London’s findings that 14 cyclists and pedestrians were injured at the roundabout in the past three years – but cyclists have dismissed the opposition as “faux outrage”
“This is going to cause more congestion and more toxic fumes in the atmosphere, all for one or two cyclists,” one local lorry driver said – but the council have responded by pointing out that once the bike lane is completed, traffic “won’t be as bad”
“Cycle infrastructure is still considered second class. It’s obvious they didn’t care,” the cyclist said
“For all the cycle lanes and LTNs to encourage people like me to cycle, and then raise the price, I can’t afford it frankly,” one cyclist said, after Cyclehoop announced that the price of storing a bike in its hangars will rise from £12 to £72 a year
The Kidical Mass ride will now take place on its originally planned route, “using a combination of the brand-new cycleway and safe on-road sections” which will be coned off to motor traffic
An FOI revealed that the council instead of using £125,000 out of the current funding to put in place any physical improvements right now, it chose to spend that on developing plans for future funding bids
Locals say access points through a new science and research campus would help create safer cycling and walking routes, especially for schoolchildren, enabling residents to avoid “dangerous areas”
The Tory politician who briefly served as deputy prime minister to Liz Truss opposed the £5m active travel scheme in her constituency, claiming it "fails to deliver and antagonises", and the "woefully bad" consultation "would be deemed unlawful" in court
The supermarket brand said it would speak to the relevant store to ensure that bicycle parking is clear for use at all times
Opening up the route to cyclists travelling in both directions has been criticised by residents and an active travel group, some asking "why on earth would anybody want to cycle down a narrow one-way street with no segregation against the traffic?"
The council has taken a calmer attitude to the infrastructure, pointing out there is "a real desire from local residents" to "make it more convenient for people in the area to be able to walk and cycle safely"
Volunteers reported being driven at and having abuse yelled at them while trying to enforce the traffic scheme that aims to help children walk or cycle to school safely
Other business owners have claimed the cycling infrastructure has robbed the street of its "soul" and "culture" and is "killing business"
Last month LNER announced that the gates to the cycle path would be shut until 2025, forcing local cyclists to use a lengthy diversion on an “unsafe” road – but the railway company has now relented following pressure from the council
Changes to a Liveable Neighbourhood design appear to have scrapped a previous plan to install a protected cycle lane on a busy road, and have been described as “radically scaled back” and “simply dangerous” by local cyclists
Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg has been an outspoken critic of the cycling infrastructure, which is believed to have tripped up more than 100 pedestrians due to confusing kerb heights and colours
Only two per cent of pupils cycle to a school near the junction – despite a further 17 per cent saying they would like to if it were safe – while a quarter of students travel by car
The council said it understood some concerns, but stressed the road markings have been designed to “help cyclists navigate the different routes” and were subject to a road safety audit before installation
The Devonshire Tunnel, part of Bath’s Two Tunnels circuit, was closed in early January after heavy rainfall overwhelmed a nearby drain, but reopened again in late March with cyclists advised to “take care”
Despite the council’s report showing a reduction in traffic volume and speeds due to the LTN, campaigners say that the decision to remove it was taken before even the report was published
“It’s shocking that on a route some of Team GB use to ride home they can put lives in danger like this,” one local cyclist said
Somerset County Council is yet to confirm when and where new and improved active travel schemes will be implemented
The developers have said the route will reopen in August 2025, taking the total period that it’s been closed to almost four and a half years.
“It’s a fact that the UK’s cycling infrastructure is awful compared to the continent,” the cyclist said, while also expressing his suspicions about the council actually taking the steps to improve the path
One cyclist described the road update as "the usual paint is not infrastructure planned by someone who has never ridden a bike"
Despite active travel infrastructure being labelled as “absolutely terrible”, a Conservative councillor maintained that the council hadn’t done a “bad job”
