Is there a reason you want a gravel bike rather than a mountain bike? Given that you have 2 road bikes already, you presumably don’t need one bike to do it all?

I have a gravel bike that I mostly use for long distance commuting on poor roads.

My new dishwasher has WiFi, seems a bit pointless. However if you are on an electricity tariff where the price changes every half hour* then you could save money by running your home appliances at the cheapest time, possibly automatically via a smart home controller.

    * Octopus is the only company in the UK I know of that offers that sort of tariff – https://octopus.energy/agile/

I was born in the late 70’s, as far as I remember we always had central heating. Turning the light off when you left the room was the rule in our house though, and everything got unplugged at night – although that was probably more to do with my mum worrying about the house burning down.

I used to be allowed out without adult supervision from quite a young age, so long as I was with my friends or my brothers and we said where we were going and what time we’d be back. But I also spent a fair amount of time indoors too, we had a computer in the house from when I was 6, I was also very into Lego and reading.

Covid restrictions were very harmful, but without them a lot more people would have died. The prediction was that over half a million people in the UK would die – https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanmic/article/PIIS2666-5247(21)00029-X/fulltext

I think the biggest mistake was waiting too long to bring in restrictions. An earlier lockdown would have been much shorter and less damaging.

    You can get gold-rated locks

You can get gold-rated locks that weigh about a kg. So even if you need 2 of them you shouldn’t need to be carrying around 6kg worth of lock.

See this list for examples (avoid the silver-rated ones though) – https://thebestbikelock.com/best-bike-lock/lightweight-bike-locks/

I use Shimano Click’r pedals, which are easy to clip in and out of. That would be a good place to start if you’ve never used clipless pedals.

So great – another dangerous driving offence that will rarely be used because the CPS haven’t got a robust working standard for dangerous driving. I wonder what the fallback is from a charge of serious injury by dangerous driving – and what is the definition of serious injury?

Serious Injury is “physical harm which amounts to grievous bodily harm for the purposes of the Offences against the Person Act 1861” See https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/52/section/1A

It is up to a jury to decide if a particular injury is serious or not. Usually GBH is charged for life-changing injuries, broken bones, requiring significant medical treatment, etc.

I’ve reported a couple of (non-collision) cases that went to court – https://road.cc/content/news/near-miss-day-733-291029

For both of these I was told the outcome of the case. I had to email the Witness Care Unit a couple of times for each case before someone responded though. So you should be able to find out what happened in court, if you can find the right person to ask.

I’m a little unclear about the driver failing to attend court. If a defendant is unable to attend court (e.g. due to illness) can their solicitor enter a guilty plea on their behalf?

While it’s understandable that you’d like some kind of explanation from the driver, a defendant is not obliged to give evidence in court.

#OpsBikes on #OpWildflower deployed to a report of a car driven anti-socially on the beach in Southport. Prior to our arrival the driver crashed, with his family in the car. Luckily only minor injuries sustained. The car is written off and the driver reported for the offence.

A small trailer might be a better option though, you can quite often find cheap second hand ones.
