What a great thread!

What a great thread!Ben Swift +1 – you seen what his twitter name is? Swiftybswift – clever eh?!
Jack Bauer is clearly very cool.
However, you all missed the daddy of brilliant names, that used to make my mum laugh when I watching the TdF at my parents house…
Bo Hamburger!
I do love the idea of a bike named ‘BOOM!’ though.

Don’t know about the other
Don’t know about the other two, but I was looking at the Trek 4.7 Seems like a really nice bike, but I wanted to change a couple of the bontrager bits for something else. The fact that those bits don’t get sold as aftermarket parts means that they wouldn’t simply swp them and let me pay the upgrade cost, I’d need to pay the full price for the parts and ebay the leftovers. Don’t know how happy you are with the full spec of each bike.Other than that, pick the one which looks fastest (IMHO the dark blue on the 4.7 is class, but the Trek brand is a bit ‘meh’ next to such exotica as Bianchi or Storck) or which makes you want to give it the beans.

Thanks for the replies,
Thanks for the replies, suppose they’re all a bit of a bodge though really.@Municipal Waste 😀 They are RSP Compact bars that came with the bike. Googling around, they seem to be usually sold that way, rather than aftermarket. I thought they were 42cm c-to-c, but it turns out that, weirdly, they are quoted as 44cm outside-to-outside, and 41.5cm c-to-c.
I’m looking for a new seatpost anyway (current one has teeth for the tilt adjustment and I can’t get quite the angle I want), so this just means I’ll look for a snazzy matching compact bar and post combo. Any recommendations?

I don’t. I think that the music is either distracting, or you are concentrating on other things (traffic/potholes/lights/effort/technique etc etc) such that your brain can end up tuning out the music anyway.I tried on a pair of those shockwave thingies at the bike and tri show in Manchester. They are bone conduction devices that sit just forward of the ear and enable you to hear music while leaving the ears uncovered. However, I found that the music could still drown out ambient sound (dependent entirely on volume), and unless you held the speakers against the bone, there was no bass whatsoever. Without bass, there’s less rhythm, and therefore less point.
Interesting story about Londonplayer’s mate. I expect that in any incident, it would be more difficult to explain that you could indeed hear the car coming (appreciate that he didn’t) – we get enough stick about hi-viz/road tax/cycle lanes/helmets as it is.

Managed to reach a compromise
Managed to reach a compromise – went to Wales on Saturday night and stay over for missus to see her Gran on mother’s day, while I got battered round 130km of wind and snowstorms Sunday morning. The seafront was nice, but Snowdon was a horror. Was ok until the last couple of miles, when I was watching the tenths tick by on the Garmin.Chapeau for Blackhound for riding more than double that!

mancsi wrote:I cant believe the attitude of car drivers. I was out yesterday for a cycle up around Macclesfield. Heading home going through Levenshume towards Manchester a black Audi A8 turns left in front of me. No indicators nothing, I was into the passenger window and over the bonnet. The back of my helmet was smashed, my phone screen in my jersey smashed and a serious road rash. Luckly nothing serious and my bike was fine. The guy approaches me and said ”You were lucky you were wearing a helmet!” He swears he indicates and always does (LIE). What do we do?Eh-up – black A8, white driver in his 40’s/50’s?
“Last week I was overtaken by a huge Audi A8 that gave me no space at all, despite a clear road, and it being perfectly safe and legal for him to cross the white line while overtaking. When he stopped at the lights I asked him to ‘leave more room please’. He wound down his window to tell me that he would then have been ‘on the other side of the road’. Not only would that have been a good manoeuvre, but it hadn’t occurred to him that if it wasn’t, he simply should have waited until it was safe to overtake. An extra second or two on his journey was worth more to him than my safety. The irony of course is that then we were both at the lights together anyway.”
I posted this here on 19-12-12:

Hope your road rash heals quickly and that the fool is paying for your phone/helmet etc.

@Trikeman, Well here’s a
@Trikeman, Well here’s a thing – I was going to post the following but couldn’t seem to word it without coming across with more macho bravado than I intended:Leaving aside the meatheads who are happy to get into a full-on fistfight anytime, I have found that those that leave the car tend to be bullies. They (always male) seem to think that the skinny geek in lycra must be some kind of wimp, which gives them an opportunity to demonstrate their masculinity/small penis size* (*delete as appropriate).
Years ago I was overtaking a stationary car and a car overtook me, squeezed me off my line and forced me to brake hard so as not to crash into the unoccupied car. My objection was met with him changing his mind about his right turn (which he was slowing down for anyway – there was no reason to overtake me!) and pursuing me. Once in front, he stopped and wound down the window. After being told that I was in fact entitled to use the road and that he should learn to drive, he said something about flattening me and opened the door. I jumped off the bike and, holding it by the stem, lifted it up straight (back tyre on the ground) and kinda changed from an annoyed human being to, well, slightly animal. I have never seen someone get back in a car so quick. Doors locked, windows up, hands shaking to restart the engine quick as. I was only 17 or so at the time, and the whole thing was like standing up to bullies at school.
Now, you reckon I would have had to do that in full leathers, visored helmet and 600cc bike? I think not. He wouldn’t have had the balls to risk it in the first place.
In all honesty, I really couldn’t see myself scrapping in cleated road shoes.

As said, I feel your pain.
As said, I feel your pain. “Where’s your high-viz?” is nothing more than admitting that he wasn’t looking.Re the camera, I do think there is an opportunity for a jersey manufacturer to produce a design to the effect of “Smile – you’re on CCTV for my safety!” with a camera logo similar to the ones for speed cameras.

Be careful how big the group
Be careful how big the group gets – our club runs tend to be fine with 10-12 people, but 20 and upwards is too unwieldy and causes problems for traffic trying to pass.Have fun though! Why don’t you get in touch with something like Look Mum No Hands and see if they’ll do a deal at the end of the route. Discount cakes or something for your group…

Well I’m inclined to use LBSs, if only because it’s useful to get your hands on something before choosing to buy it. That said, if you buy on-line, you can send back in the first month due to the distance-selling laws.notfastenough
