Yes, I tried them. Sound quality was lacking. You only get bass if you hold the speakers against the bone with your fingers, which would defeat the point. Also, the volume was either too low to hear against the ambient noise, or loud enough to drown out other sounds. Neither is good.

One of the lads in the club wears one earphone when riding. On Sunday, he and another lad took the wrong exit off a big major roundabout. I shouted into the wind, and the other lad heard me (maybe 50 metres away). He shouted repeatedly at maximum volume to the earphone wearer less than 2 metres in front of him. No response. That was the last time we saw him. One lad tried calling his phone. The other 6 of us regrouped and took the correct exit.

Not had a problem with the front mech. The mech may be faulty, but I’d try a different shop/mechanic/mech rather than mixing components.

I think I’d be tempted to look further afield for the frame – there are a fair few places selling Wilier these days.

In fact, if you know the frameset/size etc, can you source it online? I’m all for supporting the LBS, but they have to meet your needs in order to do that.

There have been ads on here where someone has bought a complete bike only to sell off the bits. There were two sellers who bought Cannondale Supersixes and were both selling SRAM groups, Cosmic Carbones etc. All great kit, but you need to have buyers available with that kind of cash disposable, which most people don’t these days.

Awful! But in a good way. God they’re hard work. I was using Angels over the winter. I’ve now bought downward spiral but yet to use it.

However, I the usefulness wears off if you use the same one too frequently, so I may branch out and use trainerroad as well.

    Thermal underneath??? :O

Your emoticon suggests I’ve offended you, for which I apologise – that was certainly not my intention. What I’m trying to say is that my bibs run up my torso such that I’m unsure how comfortable such clothing could be if I were female. Obviously a base layer/underwear can be used, but that really wasn’t my point. Never mind.

Incidentally, sometimes cycling clothing does merit slightly more sensitive discussions – if you disagree just look for some of the threads on seat pads etc. Genuinely no offence meant, but neither is there any point avoiding the question, otherwise we may as well all buy any old shite and not bother sharing experiences of them.

    I would have to agree,
I would have to agree, bashthebox. I went in the new Bike Rooms shop on Deansgate, and there is a massive printed image of that girl on the back wall. It’s a striking image, and she’s a cracking looker, but I really don’t think it would encourage real women to leave out the makeup, grab their kit and work up an unglamourous sweat on a bike.

(Off-topic, I’ve no idea if anyone has actually bought anything in there, it looks like the most expensive way in town to get on a bike)

    Something that strikes me
Something that strikes me about cycling is the number of smaller outfits. Most of the bike shops are independents, I’ve just seen a bike fitter who is a one-man band, in the past I’ve seen a sports therapist that was a two-person family business. So I guess I’m saying that employment with a company is maybe less likely.

However, I think there is definitely space in the market to make yourself a go-to person. Maybe learn about bike fitting? Train in sports massage? Breakdown recovery? How about advertising yourself as a cost-effective support vehicle for group rides? Charge, for example, 10 people a tenner each to be at pre-determined points on a big ride with drinks/spares/food etc. Combine several of these skills to maintain a rider profile for each customer that documents their spec, position, kit preferences, riding style, routes etc, then charge a monthly subscription fee to keep them riding happily in the knowledge they can turn to you for help/advice/maintenance/massage etc.

    Welcome to the forum. Just
Welcome to the forum. Just don’t mention helmets or hi-vis and you’ll be fine! đŸ˜€

Depends what you want when you refer to navigation capabilities. I couldn’t justify a Garmin 500/800, and got the 200 instead. I hadn’t realised how good the ‘Courses’ feature is.

You create the route on garmin connect (or just find one on mapmyride or something) then send to the device. I thought that since the 200 doesn’t have street-level satnav it would just show each waypoint marker (i.e. 500m that way), but instead the screen shows an accurate representation of the road ahead with the bends etc. There were a few times when I thought “that can’t be right, this road is a dead-end”, only to find that no, if you’re on a bike or walking, the thing was spot-on every time.

It’s really easy if you’re using pre-created courses as well, just connect it to the PC, browse to it same way you would any other USB drive, then drop the gpx file into the ‘newfiles’ folder. Done.

If you go off-course, it alerts you, then shows an arrow pointing you back on course. It doesn’t matter if you skip a bit, it doesn’t insist that you start back exactly where you deviated.

The only inaccuracy was that the little line showing the road went the wrong way round roundabouts, presumably due to it’s US origins.

It also runs for longer than an iphone (think I could probably get 8-10 hours), is smaller and looks less obtrusive mounted on the bike. Plus obviously you get all the usual computer functions, it’s waterproof without a bulky plastic case, and you can press the buttons with gloves on.

    Constraints:
You can’t change the course once it’s on the device.
The device has no awareness of anything off your course (side roads, diversions etc) or satnav-y things like points of interest, traffic conditions, roadworks etc.

If, on the other hand, you want turn-by-turn satnav, then unless you’ve really got the cash (and indeed the enthusiasm to know that you’ll still be using it in say 2 years time), I’d probably settle for the phone for now.

I was in the LBS last night and the staff were prepping some retro Raleigh bikes for a vintage-themed sportive. They had old-school Team Raleighs in red with new silver-finished Campag Veloce. Looked really good.
