Shimano RT82 shoes take SPD cleats and look like a road shoe, so you won’t attract comments from the roadies and the Rules…

I’m lucky enough to have inherited legs with hardly any hair, and lost the hair of my shins from years of skiing. So no need to shave here.Am I kidding myself?

+1 for the second hand on
+1 for the second hand on ebay recommendation.I got a lovely bike for my mate off ebay, a BH with carbon forks and seatstays, and full 105 groupset (except cranks), for £250. Took a few weeks though!

jasonm945: You can’t just replace the 105 levers with the Sram Rival levers. The cable pull ratio is different. You can swap cassettes and cranks, but you can’t mix levers and rear mechs:

Be warned!

+1 to the person who said you
+1 to the person who said you don’t need a new rear derailleur. You just need the 10 speed RH shifter and the 10 speed cassette.

Ultegra give you amazing
Ultegra give you amazing shifts, especially the 6600 series with exposed cables, light and precise as you could want. You can pick up a pair of ST-6600 shifters, an RD-6600 and an FD-6600 very cheaply on Ebay. Worth the (minimal) expense if you’re unhappy with 105, as you can sell the 105 on Ebay afterwards. But as I said, if you want a more ‘industrial’ feel, replace the top guide pulley with one of these:
That WILL give you more positive shifts, but at the expense of a (very) little harshness.

105 as with most Shimano
105 as with most Shimano shifters is normally very crisp. So you probably need to see what the problem is first.Have a look at the cables/derailleur adjustment and lubrication before doing anything rash.
As a last resort I recommend replacing the upper guide pulley — which has rubber bushes allowing it to cushion/soften the shift — with an alloy ceramic bearing pulley (c. £12 on ebay). That will give you a crisper shift but it may feel harsher than normal.

I ride down a too-narrow
I ride down a too-narrow protected bike lane every day that has nowhere to go if a pedestrian steps into it. I’ve god a Cateye bell mounted on the left, just below the STI, that I can operate with my left thumb while braking. I’ve used it a lot, often while braking, just too many idiots walking off the pavement into a bike lane without looking. -
