Good choice that, although for CX racing I prefer a 1x. Less to get clogged with mud, and I never found an opportunity to get into the big ring.

    Googling suggests the hub

Googling suggests the hub might be DT Swiss, in which case, yes, you can. If it is some other brand of hub, then maybe, if you can find the replacement freehub.

You need to find out which hub you have. Does it have pawls, or a pair of star ratchets?

There are videos on DT Swiss website on how to swap the hub. Simply pull the end cap off, then pull the old freehub off. I did this to go to XD on a MTB hub.

Blowout before getting the wheel back on? Sounds like trapping the inner tube when fitting. If you start fitting at the valve, then the last bit where you are levering the tyre bead over the rim will be opposite the valve, hence punctures at about 6 oclock.

Usual tips apply- partly inflate inner tube, soapy water to lubricate the bead, avoid tyre lovers if you can.

You’ve got a problem caused by the abnormal torsion you exert on the cranks, when pushing hard, on a bike which can’t move ‘naturally’ because it’s stuck in a turbo. The lighter / better the cranks, the worse it gets. I’m seeing this sort of damage / issue more and more, as the popularity of turbo type riding increases. A rocking / dynamic tilt turbo, and / or rollers, are a better option.

How is that the case? If you put force down on the pedal, yes, you are putting torque on the crank which is trying to twist it. However the proportion of that torque which would be relieved by accelerating the rotation of the bike towards the pedal if you were riding on road compared to a turbo is negligible- otherwise your power would go into spinning your bike onto its side.

I would agree that fixing a bike at the rear and putting the power down might make a difference at the seat stay, but not in the crank.

The failure is an unacceptable defect, nothing to do with a turbo trainer.

It might be the spacer to convert the hub to 142 . Based on the drawing from Podc I think you need spacer E. A quick google of the part number brings up several suppliers, for example

    105 hydraulic discs.

Do you really want to go down a hill and use rubber blocks to grind road grit into those nice carbon rims as a way to stop?

    For older youths, then old

For older youths, then old MTB with a turbo tyre on it will be good. You can get Zwift free for U16. No need to have a fancy turbo  or power meter for that either – a cheap Bluetooth/Ant+ device on the rear wheel will work. Zwift will do virtual power, based on the model and setting of trainer you have.

BC also have a variety of training programs on their website.

(I’m a L1 coach and did the BC roller specific course recently hence the links)

    How old is your son?

British Cycling coaching advice is to use rollers for youth riders. Our club use rollers from about age 9. If you see the BC development squad at the velodrome, they will start with a very intense roller session.

    lots of tips here

    1. Make sure it is the BB by spinning cranks without the chain on the chainring

    2. Assuming it’s still rough, you could pick the bearing seals out, and flush out any rusty gunge. Then pack with new grease. Push the seals back in.

Ride cyclocross if you want to race in the peak season now. Then you can join some road races in the off-season over the summer to get fit for the next CX season.
