So it’s somewhere between being another driver Straw Man and a “Government told to do x” story.
If only there were alternatives for Richard like E-scooters and e bikes/trikes – but I get that if he doesn’t fall foul of the police he’ll fall foul of his erstwhile friends, drivers.

And so it begins. I haven’t read the article, but he appears to be saying he wouldn’t pass the eye test – if there’s any logic to the headline at all.
There’s longer story behind this that since cars kill off public transport and cycling, the Richards of this world have very little to fall back on. Let’s hear the driver lobby address that one.

We’re a disgrace in the
We’re a disgrace in the developed world for the alcohol limit – equal only to America in that regard – for all the difference it makes to some people whom the system does nothing to stop getting into a car and attempting to drive it, as you say.
Isn’t one of the usual excuses for this the side effects of certain medicines? Why does the pub car park even exist?
The young people / passengers thing is pretty unpoliceable, I’d have thought. The stories of them coming to grief seem to be from hurtling around together late at night. The young driver’s car shuts down at 9 pm is the only serious solution if we have to go on living in a world of access to cars for all, with the consequence that that all other options are much reduced (see also below).
I guess the eye tests would be a start – at least it gets a person into a consultation room and might start a conversation about whether they should carry on driving or not.

Driver to face court after
Driver to face court after flipping car and fleeing in Wiltshire village
The collision involved a Suzuki Ignis and a Vauxhall Astra – with the Suzuki overturning onto its roof on impact.
The driver of the Vauxhall fled the scene, leaving their bumper and number plate in the road. Officers launched a drone to locate the suspect.
They were found a short time later, and subsequently served a Notice of Intended Prosecution for the offences of careless driving, failing to stop and failing to report a collision.

… and the parking firm haven’t been completely clear this is now sorted. Is the moral that DVLA stuff *is* actually important? Or is it “why pay AND risk the parkcos – just abandon your vehicle where you like on the streets/ roads”?BBC wrote:On 25 March 2024, Mr Lynn was sent a letter demanding £85 – £51 if he paid within 14 days. However, he said he only became aware of the matter in July this year – when he received a letter from solicitors acting on behalf of Horizon Parking demanding £165. Mr Lynn said he moved house in December 2022 but said he had, in error, not notified the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), external of his change of address until some time in “early 2024”.He’s mainly “angry” because of his poor admin – a non-story, but it is August.

chrisonabike wrote:There are lots of differences now between UK and NL beyond just the infra now. Who drives (eg. age profile for different kinds of trips), when/ where etc. differ, I think. The two things we can be confident don’t apply are “but it’s basically car-free / drivers are 2nd class citizens” (they have mass motoring and it’s still very convenient) or “but they’re all brilliant drivers there / terrified of getting caught by police” (mostly still humans driving there, with all their issues – they might be marginally better trained… and they may take road crime a *bit* more seriously, but some police have car-brain there also. It’s no more a police state there than in the UK).Apart from too much speed and a whole bunch of risk-taking, what does that leave us with, difference-wise? Was wondering – is it somewhere in that territory where the police chief claims success because no women have been attacked walking home at night in the past 12 months – because no-one ever dares to?

Topical and I don’t think I
Topical and I don’t think I’ve seen it posted here before. I always enjoy his perspective.
I was reflecting on the Drivers & Their Problems story about the hire bike parking spot. It’s a 1980s housing estate, the roads seem quite narrow and quite bendy. I daresay the whole area would in Europe be a 30 km/h zone. There are no houses placed on the through road – they’re all served by side roads and little courtyards. The road isn’t an obvious rat run. Yet the residents complaining about the proposed bike dock are also complaining about car antics.
I’m coming to think that that the monster we’ve created refuses to be calmed, like it appears to have been in The Netherlands (where, NJB guy makes the point, they have both varieties of road). I don’t think long, wide straight roads per se are very much to blame for our UK diet of CCIB stories.
