Now, this is a new event in

Now, this is a new event in the Olympic calendar so Brian, talk us through the rules.

OK Steve, well obviously the winner of this contest is the first competitor to fit a pair of Schwalbe Marathon tyres to the judges’ satisfaction.  Marathons come in a wide range of sizes, as do the wheels they are fitted to. The competitor supplies the wheels, which must be Mavic made that he or she wishes to compete with, but the judges issue the inner tubes and crucially the matching tyres.

Sounds simple enough Brian but there’s a few technical catches here aren’t there?

Yes, Steve, this is where the ETRO sizing is a major factor.  The rules are that the Tyre and tube must be the same diameter and the width within the Sheldon Brown rules  –  that’s the first number in the ETRO rating  – as the competitor’s chosen wheelset.  Competitors can choose the width of tyres they work with and bear in mind too that they will receive the relevant inter tube – that can all make a difference.

And what are the judges looking for in a completed fitting?

When a competitor declares their wheels finished, there is a 90 second inspection of their work. The tyre must be pumped-up to the highest pressure in its specification and it must hold that pressure throughout. Any bulges of inner tube or punctured tubes a the wheel will be disallowed.

And the tools they are allowed to work with, Brian?

The judges issue 3 tyre levers – there’s Park, Schwalbe, traditional metal, Decathlon types to choose from. Each type has its pro and cons. It’s a test of competitors’ strength but also their skill and dexterity.

Thanks for that, and let’s cross now to the arena, and join Kirsty who’s in what looks like a suburban garage. Kirsty.

Thanks Steve, that’s right, this is an upscale authentic replica of the garage of no 32 Acacia Avenue where this competition has its roots.  The competitors are lining up now, let’s take a look at that leaderboard.

This will surely be in the

This will surely be in the nationals by morning if not already – animal cruelty on a staggering scale.

In fact so much so, I’m even wondering about this possible explanation – the dog was in the back of the car tied up; the boot lid, the catch being a bit crappy/ not closed properly opened and the dog got out. The man just doubled down / was on something, decided to be a massive arse about it in preference to saying he made a careless mistake and fatally injured his dog. Sort of like Spanish women ‘s football man – he could still be in his job if he’d just said, “I’m really sorry the passion of winning the trophy got the better of me” etc.

Whether a bike is so hallowed

Whether a bike is so hallowed either because it’s worth £13k or it’s an amazing vintage restoration, the dilemma is whether to ride it / ride it in grotty weather.

My opinion is that a £13k bike is a security liability and that you could have up to 4 really nice bikes for that, each suited to different conditions.  Having said that, I also keep my best (Ti) bike for winter riding – it’s an incentive to go, I tell myself. Shame it runs Ultegra 6800.

Don’t forget that Dura Ace and the like are the plaything of pro teams for whom money and mechanic labour are no object.

Do bikes like these need to be looked after like a fragile prince/princess?

you’d expect to get light and strong wouldn’t you, but that isn’t always my experience of high end stuff (see above)

Do they need to be cleaned after every use?

yes – protect your investment – you’ll enjoy a clean bike a lot more

Do they require really elaborate servicing?

no more than a bike of £4K. If you’ve running snowflake modern stuff like BB30 or D12 shifting, you’re setting yourself up for the associated problems at any level. It’s easy to bash a pedal and whether you’ve paid £50 or £250 won’t make much odds.

Do people who own them keep them for spring & summer only?

yes – its usual to have a winter bike that runs full time mudguards and has chunkier tyres perhaps with a cheaper/ cheaper to run drive train.

Are they particularly iffy when the roads are frosty?
no more than anything else.  Again, though you probably won’t want to risk a spill e.g. your CF handlebars or super pricey pedals.
