I haven’t ridden one yet but
I haven’t ridden one yet but it is high on my list. Partly because it will be my LBS and I will feel involved in the build, partly because I should be able to get it on CTW. The online offerings are amazing value, but this looks to me almost as good a deal plus more personal involvement from me and more back up if it goes wrong.

I also like the mid compact; I currently have a 53/39 and 12-27, and everyone I ride with who has a compact climbs a little bit faster than me, and I think it takes less out of them. I haven’t been beaten by a hill yet, but I think a 36 small will make enough of a difference on the steep hills and a 52 is better for the rest of the time.

(I’m also looking at Cannondale Supersix, Canyon 8.0, Sensa Aquila, maybe a Rose, all around £1500. The Sensa is less than 7 kilos (they say!))

I’d visit a couple of local bike shops (LBS) and get their opinion to start. I can only think of one frame with a weight limit – Kinesis Aithein at 89 kg – but 120 kilos may be a different scenario. Your work will probably have a couple of shops if they have a cycle to work scheme. Trek have a lifetime guarantee on their frames, at least their MTBs, my brother in law is on his third frame somehow.

I’ve been roped into a team Everesting early summer, can’t see beyond that. 8| I hope it will make me an absolute superman for the rest of the year, we shall see. Planning to lose a couple of kgs and hopefully upgrade the bike as my 50th birthday pressie.

I hadn’t charged my Cree for a few days and it packed up on me tonight with about 40 mins to go. My back up light isn’t strong enough for unlit roads but I had to make do. I would make sure you have a battery light front and rear as well as rechargeable ones.

Have you an objection to a battery pack? There are any number of Cree lights on Ebay for around £20-£25, I’ve got two and they are more than I need for unlit country roads. The battery pack hangs under the stem, and once it is in place it’s fine. I can’t understand why anyone would pay any more.

I also have a Moon something or other, about the size of a matchbox, USB rechargeable. I usually have this one on flash and the CREE on steady.

I would really recommend having two lights front and rear; I haven’t had one suddenly run out of charge yet but I lose sleep about it happening!

Makes you realise how the weather affects your ability to get out – did one a month from Jan til May, then started doing a lot more.

    My bike has mainly Veloce
My bike has mainly Veloce parts with some Mirage and a Miche cassette. No real problems with it but I find getting parts in a rush can be a headache, which I’m sure if it was Shimano I could go to any bike shop and get over the counter. The left crank arm fell off a year ago and it took over a week and lot of phone calls and internet searching before I was back on the road again.

The canyon is my dream bike so I can’t put my old sram crankset on it,
It does hilight a problem if you r buying a canyon bike, the only model I can buy with a 34/50 crank on is a bike I don’t want.
So I’m having to buy the bike I really want, with the gears I don’t !
Canyon should look into this because it must put some people off..

The mid-compact makes Canyon even more attractive for me! I run a 53-39 with a 12-27 cassette; I feel a 52-36 will be a better compromise and as the other posters have said you can change the cassette easily

I’m in a similar boat to you, hoping to get £1500 to spend next year but £1k may be more negotiable…
Sensa do some nice bikes through Merlin cycles.
Planet X may have an offer that comes in the £1k bracket.
    Dolan have my interest too.
Cannondale Supersix if you can get it on offer; may be a bit racy if you have comfort/injury problems?
I’d love to go for a Kinesis Aithein (Winstanley’s have frames for under £500) but I can’t wait to source all the parts and get it built up, and I’ve not had a carbon bike so that is a must for me.

I thought it was a football
I thought it was a football reference to a game that ended 5-nil! Hawaii is much more exotic!
Anyway, re-thinking the plans, switching to a Campag semi-compact is going to cost more than the bike is worth, as is the 105 option, so am now looking for a cost-effective replacement drive train. I have a very very hilly ride (think attempted Everesting…) coming up before next summer, so I think I should go for a compact and get it on the bike as early as I can so I can train with higher cadence this will give me for as long as possible. I can see some secondhand cranks on Ebay that say they work with 9 or 10 speed, so will be going that route.

To change from 9 speed will need a new shifter, will the rear derailleur be ok?

OP, I would really recommend two lights front and rear; you can never be 100% sure if you have just one that it isn’t going to conk out on you, for whatever reason.

Can I ask why you don’t like the battery pack ones? I have a couple of the cheap Chinese ones from Ebay and they are brilliant, I really cannot understand why anyone would pay more.
