I’m in a similar boat
I’m in a similar boat budget-wise to you. My short list includes Cannondale Supersix, BMC Teamachine, Orro Oxygen, Kinesis Aithein. These are available through local bike shops and cycle to work.
If the Internet was an option there’s the Dolan Tuono, Sensa Aquila, Planet X/Ridley/Ribble and of course Canyon and Rose. Rose seem to have the most appeal of all of them to me, looks, spec, weight, vfm. And you can tweak the spec to your hearts delight, a lot of the specials from the other companies you get what they tell you.Daveyraveygravey

You were doing so well til the last sentence and then it all fell apart! I love beer and I love cycling, although I tend not to do both at the same time these days. A couple of pints in the middle of a long ride in the summer with friends – one of the joys of being alive. Ok so the first half hour after when you are trying to get going again is a bit of a struggle…Daveyraveygravey
I’m looking to spend about
I’m looking to spend about 1500 and have a shortlist of about..12, mabye 15! Rose look the business to me and the weights seem bang on. The OP said you can’t ride every bike, in my experience you are very lucky to get a proper ride on any bike, I mean 5-10 miles on roads you know so you can compare different types.Daveyraveygravey

As I said too – I’ve spent much more than even a top end bike fit getting physio, add in the mental torture of a few months off the bike and it’s not good!
Davey – ironically I’ve used charge spoons on the mtb for a few years and always got on great……they’re just not bling enough to put on my shiny new carbon bike 🙂
It is interesting like a couple of you have said to look back through to what I think caused it. Thinking about it it all really started when I started to fiddle with my seat height for tt-ing about 3 years ago! I should just have left alone :(Not bling enough?! I know what you mean though. The two demo Fizik saddles were fluoro pink so you wouldn’t just not take them back to the shop, so the Spoon looked “normal” and right as soon as I put it on. My next bike will be bling too, but I’m torn between something Arione-like in looks but it has to be more comfy…

Would also recommend a bike
Would also recommend a bike fit, had the Spexialisedyone at £120 (plus 110 on shoes and 70 on bars etc..) It isn’t cheap but all the things that used to make me want to,stop riding are gone. As someone else said it is a lot of money in one go but over a lifetime on the bike it’s peanuts.
Also tried both those Fizik saddles as part of the fit, the Arione was agony but I stuck with it for 10 days and about 200 miles because the expert recommended it. The Aliante was much better but had a Charge Spoon at home and that for me is better than either Fizik. If I could I would try some more, saddles are very very personal and what you and I might find torture others might find perfect.Daveyraveygravey

I guess it’s a fair point, their model is primarily about encouraging people to *start* commuting by bike, and so partner mainly with local bike shops where people can go for advice on what sort of bike to buy. You don’t really get that with Canyon.
Shame though, as I do concede that amongst the various online/direct retailers, they do seem to offer a very good combo of both quality and value for money.
Among ANY retailer they offer a very good combo… I’m struggling to find a better deal; if you’ve got between 1000 and 1500 to spend the Ultimate or Endurace beat everything I can see in terms of bang for buck… Rose too…January 9, 2015 at 1:08 pm in reply to: Bowman Palace frameset Vs Canyon Ultimate AL SLX frameset #825641Daveyraveygravey

Thanks for everyone’s input :)
Either I didn’t see that review, or glossed over that part and hoovered up the more favourable comments. I’m hoping to have a (car park ) trial ride of an Aithein soon, will be paying attention to the harshness of the ride.
Wonder if Canyon would sell me a VCLS seatpost?! They look pretty funky apart from any comfort benefit…January 9, 2015 at 6:50 am in reply to: Bowman Palace frameset Vs Canyon Ultimate AL SLX frameset #825631Daveyraveygravey

I was approaching an angled
I was approaching an angled junction in my car close to home; the road I was on is a quiet road from the town to a main road; if the main road is clear you can join it at about 20 mph, maybe more. Making that decision is a bit of a judgement call, there isn’t a lot of distance to stop if you change your mind.
I was approaching this junction about a year ago, glanced to the right and thought it was clear. For some strange reason I had a second longer look and spotted a cyclist who I would probably have driven into if I hadn’t looked again.
I too think I am a good driver, and especially considerate around cyclists and was shocked that I had nearly run into a bike. The cyclist didn’t have any light that I remember, but it was daylight.
My only explanation is I didn’t take enough care to look properly; perhaps I was just looking for something large like a car or lorry. I’ve changed how I drive because of it, and take more care of drivers at junctions when on my bike.Daveyraveygravey

I’m guessing the Rose is a cross bike from the “cdx ” which if you’re on Tarmac only I would think there are better ways of spending your money.
The UK shops that rival Rose are all in the north; Planet X in Sheffield, Dolan in Ormskirk (?) and Sensa (Merlin cycles) in Preston. Ribble in Lancs too.
What is it about the two bikes you like and what is your budget? You want lightness, a compact chainset and a cassette with a 28 or bigger.December 31, 2014 at 4:15 pm in reply to: Please Help me decide: Canyon Endurance Aluminium Ultegra 7.0 2015 or Felt Z6 Carbon tiagra 2014 #824607Daveyraveygravey

It annoys me how companies like Giant and even shops like Evans expect you to spend a decent wad of cash and they can’t tell you the weight of what they want you to buy.Yeah me too! In my research so far, I have found a couple of alu bikes under 7kg, so I’m now really struggling to want anything with an “8” in it! It’s not like it’s hard to weigh a bike either!

I’d get the new bike. I’m also looking at a CTW purchase, and the actual choosing the bike is a great process, for me anyway. I’ve had my ebay special for 2 years, done nearly 11,000 miles on it in that time and love it, but if something new comes along, it will be back on ebay to appease the wife!I wouldn’t worry that the new one is too good for the commute or not forgiving; it’s only 12 miles each so not like you’ll have to spend all day in the saddle. I would keep the old one for the worse months of the year though.

Canyon also do carbon framed
Canyon also do carbon framed bikes for that money. Either material can be made into a frame that is harsh and stiff or more comfort oriented. I think you’d have to ride both for a few hours to see if you prefer one over the other.
Rose also make carbon and alu bikes around that price, the alu ones seem very well specced and light too.Daveyraveygravey
