I wouldn’t mind doing it once a year, as long as I can go home and shower afterwards.

Bad crash near me, five
Bad crash near me, five hospitalised after three vehicle crash.
That looks like a lot of damage for a posted 30 MPH road! The grey bricks on the right side of the photo are a bike lane which is in no way protected from this crap. I use it occasionally, and have a couple of friends who use it nearly every day.
It sunk relative to the roadway after construction, so there’s a lip on the side now which had made me crash once. A friend crashed on it and had a massive lump around his eye despite wearing a helmet.

I get it, but this would also hold true for something that was a public good, like fire brigades.

Gold isn’t nearly strong
Gold isn’t nearly strong enough to make a 5 kg frame. It’s about 2.5 times denser than steel.
Take a relatively light steel frameset… 1.8 kg.
Double all the wall thicknesses to account for gold having roughly half the Young’s modulus and yield strength.
Multiply by the density ratio.1.8 kg x 2 x 2.5 = 9 kg.
At $135/g, $1.2 million.
At £100/g, £900k.

I just helped a friend build
I just helped a friend build one. If you’re finding anything with a motor, battery, lighting, gears, and disc brakes under $/£/€1000 complete, it’s junk. On his, I found:
- Screws made of Chinesium or perhaps a semi-firm cheese
- Brakes extremely difficult to get firm and effective
- Heavy but dodgy rear mudguard attachment
- A couple of threaded holes that needed re-tapping
To be honest, it rode okay when I got everything sorted. It may last him a long time since I doubt he’ll put more than 100 miles a year on it.

Ordered. I’ve listened to those guys for a long time.
I don’t know if this link will work in the UK, but I encourage you to buy from an independent bookseller if you can, rather than Amazon.
