I get it, but this would also hold true for something that was a public good, like fire brigades.

    Gold isn’t nearly strong

Gold isn’t nearly strong enough to make a 5 kg frame. It’s about 2.5 times denser than steel.

Take a relatively light steel frameset… 1.8 kg.
Double all the wall thicknesses to account for gold having roughly half the Young’s modulus and yield strength.
    Multiply by the density ratio.

    1.8 kg x 2 x 2.5 = 9 kg.

    At $135/g, $1.2 million.

    At £100/g, £900k.

I just helped a friend build one. If you’re finding anything with a motor, battery, lighting, gears, and disc brakes under $/£/€1000 complete, it’s junk. On his, I found:

    • Screws made of Chinesium or perhaps a semi-firm cheese
    • Brakes extremely difficult to get firm and effective
    • Heavy but dodgy rear mudguard attachment
    • A couple of threaded holes that needed re-tapping

To be honest, it rode okay when I got everything sorted. It may last him a long time since I doubt he’ll put more than 100 miles a year on it.

I don’t know if this link will work in the UK, but I encourage you to buy from an independent bookseller if you can, rather than Amazon.

    I have lots of childhood

I have lots of childhood memories at Black Rock Sands, including how much it hurt walking across the pebbles to get to the sand, and bechdans (sandwiches) for lunch which always had a stray sand grain or three in them.

If I lived there, I would dedicate my weekends to finding this person so that I could buy them a pint.

Look for someone who owns a sign printing shop. Those look expensive if you had to pay someone else to make them.

My wife’s Nissan Leaf (2011-2017) will fit a bike with both wheels on.

I can confirm that the (BMW) MINI convertible (R52) through 2008 will NOT fit one.

Here’s my video of the descent. Not exactly riveting content, but it is an absolutely beautiful road!

I’ll probably make a sped up version and add some music or something.
