Half a mile is about 800m, which can be walked in well under 15minutes. #carbound

Well, well under. I did 24 minute miles last weekend hiking on steep off-road paths carrying a 35 pound pack. Earlier in the day, 16:33 per mile with no pack. On flat ground, 800 m is probably seven minutes.

Here’s 18 minute miles, up a decent hill, with my less fit brother.

I mean all credit to people in the US – that’s pretty much the world benchmark for King Car (bar maybe some bits of the middle east oil states) … in a lot of places the notion of adding *pedestrian* infra in towns and residential areas is a bit of a new thing…

True for a lot of areas, but this is in an early 1900s neighbourhood / first ring suburb, so most of it does have pavements.

It’s about time they just pulled down that ‘woke’ bridge that’s getting in the way of hard-working, put-upon drivers. I bet it wears lycra in its spare time and joins Greta Thunberg’s protests.

I wish I was a bridge, able to damage the cars of terrible drivers then be fully repaired afterwards. Or maybe more like this guy.

I have a Burley Travoy trailer as well. If you don’t need to transport kids it is a great option. Quickly attaches to any bike and folds down for storage. A big advantage is that you can take it into shops with you. It means that if a supermarket has the handheld self scanners, you can do 1 touch shopping from the supermarket shelf to the fridge/cupboard at home. You also don’t have to worry about the security of your shopping if you are going to multiple shops.

Also use it for trips to the tip. Amazing how much you can carry using a few bungees.

Did you get Burley’s expensive bags for shopping into? If so, how do you like them? I haven’t pulled the trigger on those yet, I’ve just been lashing reusable shopping bags onto the trailer, but it’s a couple minutes of extra faff.

    Some of it’s clearly not

Some of it’s clearly not needed, but when the direct route is a nightmare for cycling and there’s no reasonably direct (say, 15% more distance or less) it can be a game changer for cycling.

A friend of mine brought me a pamphlet last night, the neighborhood got a grant to improve this road that she lives on, and she asked if I was worried that the plan prioritised pedestrians over cyclists. I said I’d always put pedestrians first if there’s a conflict.

The plan is to add nice pavements, but there’s also talk of bike lanes. This road is a relatively quiet residential street, 40 feet (12 m) wide including the pavement, with stop signs every few blocks, an is already one of the most used in the area by me and many other cyclists according to the Strava heatmap. There’s a parallel four-lane road with fewer stops a quarter mile to the east for the drivists.

I’d rather have no bike infrastructure than the door zone bike lanes or sharrows they’re likely to put in.

The worst day for Exeter commuter traffic (it’s Wednesday)

    Exeter has the nation’s second-largest travel-to-work population

Mr Knight acknowledged that different days of the week now offer distinct challenges to ensure sure buses are on time and not impacted by congestion.

He explained that keeping buses to schedule all week would require a bespoke timetable for each day, but stated that this was “impossible” operationally and is not something that the firm is considering, because passengers expect a Monday-to-Friday schedule, with different timetables at weekends.

interesting to hear a bit about the impact on buses of too many cars – another issue you have to deny if you’re a car driver

Does Wednesday actually have more travel? Or is this a historical accident where traffic is worse on Wednesday which means the busses are slower so more people drive on Wednesdays and the traffic is worse so the busses are even slower so more people drive on Wednesdays?

So apparently vans can’t drive [themselves] competently on THC either!

There are definitely some questionable examples. E.g. in my neck of the woods, this stretch of road recently dropped to 20mph. I don’t particularly mind, but it’s not residential, and until a couple of years ago the speed limit was 40 (then dropped to 30 when surrounding roads became subject to one of the pilot 20 zones), so I can see why some might think it’s unnecessarily low.

I see plenty of pedestrians on a pavement directly adjacent to the roadway with no protection, so yeah, 20 MPH seems appropriate.

Maybe the Welsh government could promise drivers they’ll raise it to 25 MPH if drivers can go two years without killing anyone.

Perhaps a gentle reminder of what to do BEFORE they hit an animal would be a better idea?

Preferably before NOT hitting an animal.

    I commuted with this strapped

I commuted with this strapped to the back of my fatbike from about the 26th of October to Halloween a few years ago. It had a spare pulsing rear light inside and looked pretty cool in the dark.

Some people think I’m a bit strange.

I’ve said this before somewhere, but like on any of the heavy, dangerous machines I am around at my work, and like many race cars, there should be a large E-Stop button on the dash which physically cuts all power to the drivetrain with the minimum complexity possible. Not a signal on a 5 V line to a CPU somewhere politely requesting a shutdown. On a combustion powered car, it should shut off power to the solenoid controlling a normally closed valve on the fuel near the injector rail. On an electric car, shut off power to normally open solenoids on all poles of power to the motors or controller.

In the UK, its functionality should be tested as part of the MOT.

    I ride in about everything,
I ride in about everything, but I’ve waited out the heaviest bits of lightning storms, or left earlier to avoid them. Tornados I wait out whether I’m cycling or driving. I’ve taken rides with people before when there’s been unexpected harsh weather I wasn’t prepared for, like cold rain with no gear.
