Ok, just noticing this on my own bike. The rear wheel I bought from wheelbuilder.com. The front I rebuilt on my existing SON hub with a rim ordered by my LBS. Both are the same DT Swiss GR531 rim, except for the number of holes.

Why does the front rim have the valve hole aligned with a sticker, and the other has it between the two stickers?!

I know I’ll never get a “Super Nice” on the GCN show with it like this. Can I get one exchanged under warranty?

Edit: never mind, it’s on me! The stickers on the other side of each rim are shifted 90°. Did I build it wrong? No way am I going to re-lace the front to fix this.

I have a couple of lights

I have a couple of lights without well-shaped beams. I just use one hand to shade the top until I’m past the oncoming cyclist or pedestrian.

Unless they’re pointing a bright beam at my face.

This is the bike I used for

This is the bike I used for my LEJoG last year. After that, it deserved a treat: new powder coat and new wheels after the Hunt wheels cracked at the nipples. It’s a Black Mountain Road Plus, currently at over 16500 miles, 26500 km.

I also splurged on the ENVE bar tape. It seems very nice so far.

Acorn bag which I’ve owned since my previous touring bike.

René Herse 46/30 crankset and Switchback Hill Tires, 650b x 48 mm, tubeless. Mechanical 11 speed Ultegra. I have a 27 tooth for the crankset coming, as I didn’t like how much walking I had to do on my LEJoG.

    If you haven’t already,

If you haven’t already, consider searching for powder coaters, too. I just got mine done (in the USA, sorry) and am very happy. They can do gloss and candy in powder coat now, so it’s not just the nearly matte look of a Surly frame.

Did you make that screenshot, and then save it, upload it, and think “that’s exactly what I was going for?”

    That’s art.

andystow – just looking at AccuWeather, you’ve had some serious cold, enough to make anyone stay indoors, and your temp forecast isn’t too far off ours this week – but most days, your humidity is in single figures. -14 deg C, 0% humidity today.

This morning’s commute was -10 °F / -23 °C. I doubt the relative humidity is really that low. The dew point might be -30 °C, but that’s still 30% humidity outside. Still, there’s hardly any water in the air at that point, so unless you humidify your house the indoor air will be single digit %RH.

Here’s the local observations from the nearby airport weather station.

I went out for a couple of beers on a lovely sunny day yesterday in central Illinois, USA.

I am pleased to learn that the police do sometimes enforce road safety laws.

And I’m very pleased that someone with far more money than sense (or societal ethics) has been caught out.

As you say, I trust that this vehicle will now be crushed.

Remove the motors and sell them, then turn it into a battery backup for a hospital or school or something.

    These things and other cheap

These things and other cheap ebikes are the culprit around me. At least they have lights, but there’s no beam cutoff or even brightness settings.

They have much brighter lights than the one that came on my wife’s Townie Electra, which cost more than twice as much.

Another cost to everyone else arising from cars – putting in the substantial bollards described here isn’t going to come cheap.

Obviously a woke waste of money!  We just need better drivers! Through .. er … more police / “tech” / “self-driving cars” (one for “non-drivers and their problems”?) / sending everyone “back where they came from” we don’t like (is this right?) etc.

We (society) would probably get a lot more value out of using the sensors, computers, and controllers that were intended to enable self-driving cars, to give us self-stopping cars. Cars that refuse to drive into people or buildings, go too fast around corners, drive on the wrong side of the road, or drive onto pavements. If it needs to be over-ridden for legitimate reasons, the car could go into a 5 MPH mode.
