A cycling lane has been criticised by riders who say it is five times narrower than it should be.
A council spokesperson said it was 'unfortunate' that the 'appropriate' cycle path width could not always be achieved on some roads, Bolton News reports.
Horwich Cycling Club President Dave Headon said that the 'path' is less than the 44cm width of the handlebars on his bike and much narrower than Cycling UK's recommended 2m.
Mr Headon explained that the offending cycling lane was marked out on Belmont Road near Bolton, a few months ago.
Mr Headon said that parts of the lane near the San Marino restaurant had been repainted and narrowed from around 80cm to 40cm.
He said: “I never used to think of Belmont Road as being a problem for me when I have been cycling.
“But the cycle lane has created a problem.
“It pushes cyclists further towards the kerb putting them at risk of clipping it with the tyres.
"Some drivers also think they can drive right up to the edge of the line when they should be leaving space when they are passing.
“My road bike handles are 44cm wide and don’t fit in the cycle lane.
"Mine are much narrower than mountain bike handles as well.
“I think it is a tokenistic cycle lane. It is not safe.
“Some friends have spoken to me about it too.”
Mr Headon, a cycling instructor who teaches youngsters across Greater Manchester, said the cycle lane should be widened and the council could consider using the pavement to extend it.
The stretch of road where the cycle lane has been painted lies within Blackburn with Darwen Council's territory.
West Pennine Cllrs Jean Rigby and Julie Slater claimed they have not received any complaints about the road from cyclists but say they will contact the local authority's highways department about the concerns that have been raised over the safety of the cycling lanes.
Cllr Slater said: "At the end of the day cycle lanes needs to be safe and cyclists need to feel safe.
"I know what it is like to be out riding.
"The cycle lanes need to be the correct width for cyclists.
"I will speak to the highways department about it."
A Blackburn with Darwen Council spokesman said: "We try to do all we can to encourage safer cycling and the cycle lanes have been lined with the best intention of segregating cyclists and traffic.
"The appropriate widths unfortunately could not be achieved at some locations due to the overall width of the road narrowing and widening along its length.
"It is unfortunate that the statutory widths could not be delivered over the entire length of the road but we hope that it still offers protection and segregation for the cyclist from passing traffic."

The Desirable Minimum width is 2m. 1.5m is the Absolute Minimum, but only 'at constraints' - i.e. for a short section due to a physical feature that makes 2m impossible.
Where was that table sourced from? It seems incongruous that the council implement a less than the minimum specified cycle lane so as to not diminish the car lane below the permissible width. Complying with one set of legislation at the expense of another is plain daft.
How does this thing even get to a drawing board?
By ensuring that no actual cyclists are involved and that it generates a nice little tick in a box on some paper form.
And no safety audit.
They're better off not putting the painted line in, as drivers will often punishment pass you if you're riding in this sh1t lane
Better no lane than that cockup. At least then you could take primary without most motorists abusing you for being out of the lane..
I'm not a great fan of them but surely on that piece of road the better option would have been a lane on the pavement - it looks pretty wide.
Totally inadequate and should be removed. No cycle lane in the opposite direction either.
There is a lane on the other side. It's just full of junk, overhung with branches, and narrows to grid width in places. Going up the San Marino side on the mountain bike, I'll use the wide pavement with the kids, which has the benefit of seeing the piglets.
That's actually a lot more dangerous than not having the lane at all. If I were cycling along that road, I'd be torn between using the lane to appease drivers (which is not a good strategy) or ignoring it and cycling a usual 50cm or so from the kerb and attracting abuse and punishment passes from a minority of drivers.
Near me there is a similar width 'thing'. I just cycle on the line, which I can do as there're no posts etc or any bends to worry about in the wet.
Seperately, what's with the americanism '5 times smaller'. Don't we use fractions any more? Though to sound more 'impressive', should have said '500% smaller' !
At least no 'busses' were involved.
If it was 500% smaller, it would have a width of -400% of what it should be, which would put it on the pavement - which would probably be an improvement.
I'm in the US, and I can't stand it either! Is it an Americanism or just modern-journalist-ism?
Wouldn't "one time smaller" be a width of zero" if it had any meaning at all?
It's a combination of a lack of understanding of real mathematics and ignorance.
Ignore it every time.
