Nino Schurter has left an indelible mark on cross-country mountain biking, being the man to beat throughout his tenure between the tapes. And after a couple of years of speculation and rumours, he’s announced his retirement with 2025’s UCI World Cup in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, on the 21st of September being his final UCI Cross-Country event. It’s said that he’s chosen this particular event because it’s the venue where he took his eighth World Champion title and his 34th World Cup. It’s also his home mountain and training ground.

It’s not only within UCI-sanctioned racing where he’s proven a force to be reckoned with, as Schurter has bagged bronze, silver, and gold medals at the Beijing 2008, London 2012, and Rio 2016, respectively. That’s as well as 10 World Champion titles, nine World Cup Overall Champion titles, 36 World Cup wins, and three Cape Epic victories.
Nino Schurter isn’t leaving mountain biking completely as he’s set to take a role within the Scott-SRAM MTB Racing Team and will continue to be an ambassador for Scott, SRAM, and RockShox.

Additionally, he’ll be focusing on event and charity projects, as well as long-distance and gravel races. He’s also got his sights set on 2026’s Absa Cape Epic.
“I’m incredibly thankful for everything I achieved in my life as a professional mountain bike racer. Now it’s time to take all this experience into a new chapter of my life. I’m sure what comes from here is going to be just as exciting. Yes, I’m saying goodbye to cross-country World Cup racing, but I will remain in the exciting world of cycling with all the great people involved,” says Nino Schurter.
