More close passes in our Near Miss of the Day feature today, sadly, this time from Hampshire.
The footage was submitted by road.cc reader Matt, who told us: “I’m going to be contacting the company about this one … inches from my bars.. “
> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 – Why do we do the feature and what have we learnt from it?
Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.
If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info@road.cc">info@road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.
If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won’t show up on searches).
Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

From the back of the van, it
From the back of the van, it looks like they are accredited under one or more schemes (Checkatrade?). Perhaps someone could help identify these schemes so we can pass on feedback?

That’s pretty close to what we got today. Middle of nowhere (Caldbeck Cumbria), three of us, front pair riding two up. Van shot past us, flat out, beeping his horn. Missed my mate by inches. Sadly, none of us had a camera. If you find yourself likely to call out ‘Derwent Fire Extinguishers’, ask them if they are sympathetic to cyclists.

We had similar recently on a road out of Shrewsbury.
When we got home I emailed the company and they investigated it as their vans have trackers and dash cams, and took disciplinary action against the driver.
Meh. That’s not a near miss
Meh. That’s not a near miss/close pass by Surrey standards

It’s a terrible pass, but you
It’s a terrible pass, but you’re riding far too close to the kerb, which invites drivers to go for it even when there’s oncoming traffic. Riding a bit further out forces drivers to have to cross the centre line to get past and therefeore take account of oncoming traffic. It also gives the rider a bit of room to move over if an overtake is a bit close.

What has the centre line got to do with a safe (1.5m) pass? Driver must learn accept this or fuck off!

In a contest with lump of metal approaching them and cyclist on a bike, the cyclist will be the one squeezed every time in that case. Nothing wrong with the road position at all imo.
But I always appreciate vans with company logos on,it gives me an idea of who to add to the list of companies id never use again on principle 🙂

So it’s the cyclists fault? Taking the primary position might work with some drivers but I expect not with those that like to punish pass like this twat.
As to making room to move over, this is pointless advice since once the close pass has occured it’s going to be too late to move.
When are you going to start
When are you going to start the “Stupid manouvre of the day” series?
Lovely one this morning when a van driver pulled out on me on a roundabout – local business, liveried van.
I’ll be contacting both the police and the company concerned when I get the footage off the camera… 🙂
Sadly, I don’t think I got the registration of the car in the same manouvre.

According to that link, the team has “training in first aid”. Perhaps they could also train their drivers not to drive like twats.
