Jasmijn Muller to begin LEJOG and 1,000-mile record attempts on Tuesday

Current women’s LEJOG record has stood for 15 years

Jasmijn Muller will on Tuesday begin attempts on two women’s solo cycling records: Lands End to John O’Groats and 1,000 miles.

Earlier this year, the 38-year-old former British national 12-hour time trial champion set a new distance record on Zwift, the computer software that allows cyclists to ride within a virtual world.

While her 1,136-mile mark was subsequently broken by Chris Hopkinson, she said at the time that the effort was merely preparation for this week’s attempts.

She says that if all goes to plan, she’ll cover the 841-mile LEJOG trip in under 52 hours and 45 minutes to break Lynne Taylor’s record, which has stood since 2002. She will then ride on to try and beat the 1,000-mile women’s record of 64 hours and 38 minutes, currently held by Lynne Biddulph.

“For me, LEJOG isn’t just about breaking a record,” said Muller. “Everyone who has ever attempted the ride knows that it’s a test of who you are as much as of what you can do.

“I hope that I’ve got the same inner strength as the remarkable men and women who have taken on this challenge over the years. In turn, I hope that I can inspire others to challenge their own limits or enjoy the satisfaction of travelling from A to B under your own steam.”

Muller’s progress can be followed at her website where you’ll find the obligatory tracker.

Her first long distance ride was a 100-mile Cancer Research UK ride from Penrith to Warrington in September 2010 – one that she credits with drawing her into the sport – and she is again raising money for CRUK. You can donate here

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.
