Council do wobbly diagram of how to use zig zag bike lane

It’s entirely safe and logical and the sign proves it…

Bizarre road layout? Add some signage. The SheffieldCyclingCity account has drawn attention to an interesting piece of cycle infrastructure which appears to have been given its own instructions.

The wiggly cycle lane itself was constructed in August 2015 on Penistone Road North at what looks to have previously been the junction with Beeley Wood Road.

The SheffieldCyclingCity account, which parodies the council’s approach to cycling, has since published photos of how it has since been ‘improved’.

The cycle lane is real and as far as we can tell, this sign is too.

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

Bit of a sharp narrow entry to it, lots of slippery paint around the entrance. Other than that it just seems a bit on the wide side, could have been at least half the width and still had room for bollards signs etc...

Why could they not have put the traffic island to the left of the cycle lane and then they wouldn't have had to Zig-Zag.

I can understand the need for an island to prevent idiot car drivers taking a left and taking out a cyclist but why have the island to the right of the cycle lane.

Because there is access to a driveway to the photographer's left. So, if the person who lives there wants to get on their drive, they have to drive the wrong way up a (little, useless bit of) cycle lane.

Or you could just make the driveway open onto the main road instead.

All perfectly normal for British cycle provision, I don't know what they are whining about.  Spend all this money providing for those ungrateful cyclists and they still won't use it.

As someone who lives in the the South West, I can confirm that this level of provision is nation wide.

One of the biggest problems is that councils do not listen to cyclists, prefering their own tame experts, who rode a bike once and didn't like it.  Mind you they don't listen to consultation full stop.  I've just responded again to a consultation about a zebra crossing which I've already responded to a year ago. using exactly the same letter, pointing out that it had serious hazards for cyclists and pedestrians.  They obviously didn't even read it and have just re-issued the same proposal without addressing any of the obvious hazards.

There needs to be some sort of suitable punishment for people who sign off these projects. Public stoning would be my choice.

In swansea they just got rid of the segregated bike lane I ride to work on, replacing it with a shared space and a ridiculous 5 mph speed limit. I contacted my county councilor for sustainability etc. and his response was that there "had been issues with conflict between cyclists and pedestrians" so their solution was to put cyclists and pedestrians in the same space without any segregation?

Stupid or what?

Shame they painted a double yellow line, that looks like an excellent spot to park your car.

Double yellow lines are for taxis (and parents dropping kids off who are too lazy to walk the extra 20 metres).

I cannot see why this structure was necessary and I definitely cannot see what kind of overpaid idiot thought it was a good idea.

where I live double yellows mean park wholly on the pavement. (Single yellow = half on the pavement) This would be a real conundrum as the pavement in question is not as wide as a car.

Looks like they couldnt put the island on the left of the cycle lane due to the access required for the drive for the house, you can see where the dropped curb is.  Not really sure how else you could resolve it, other than not close that road. Its no different to a bus stop bypass is design though.

I wonder if a bollard or two couldn't have been squeezed in to close the road off rather than the absurd solution they ended up with.

Still, it gives motorists something else to get angry about when they see cyclists ignoring the luxurious cycle lane and outrageously stick to the road instead.

This is part of the abysmal Penistone cycle-lane. which continues to demonstrate how not to build attractive, effective, segregated infrastructure. it's largely ignored, and hence wheeled-out every time some dingbat wants to point out that cyclists ignore cycle lanes.

there are not enough punches in the face being delivered for crimes like this.

 

Sheffield council, making cycling worse, one crap bike lane at a time.

Why? What possible benefit. Good news chaps we've managed to provide 5 extra metres of segregated cycle lane.

Chicane is inconvenient and potentially dangerous in wet and icy conditions.
